1/49 SUOMEN ILMAILULIITTO RY LASKUVARJOTOIMIKUNTA Kalustotyöryhmä 11.3.2003 KALUSTOTIEDOTE 84-01 URHEILULASKUVARJOJEN PAKKAUSJAKSON MUUTOS AIR M10-2 muutos 6 mukaisesti urheilulaskuvarjot on avattava tuuletusta varten ja pakattava vähintään kuuden kuukauden välein. Mikäli valmistaja on määrittänyt tuuletus- ja pakkausjaksoksi lyhyemmän ajan, on sitä noudatettava. Suomessa käytössä olevien varavarjojen osalta voidaan todeta, että toistaiseksi ei ole tiedossa valmistajaa, joka määräisi valmistamalleen varavarjolle lyhyemmän pakkausjakson kuin 6 kk. Poikkeuksena tästä on Strong Enterprises, joka määrää valmistamilleen tandemvaravarjoille 4 kk:n pakkausjakson. Myös keskustelua herättäneille Glide Pathin varavarjoille sovelletaan Suomessa 6 kk:n pakkausjaksoa. Kyseisen valmistajan ei tulkita määräävän varavarjoilleen mitään pakkausjaksoa, ainoastaan toteavan, että paikallinen viranomainen Yhdysvalloissa (FAA) määrää varavarjojen pakkausjaksoiksi 120 päivää. PÄÄVARJON JOUSIAPUVARJON KIINNIKKEET STUDENT WINGSEISSÄ Osassa Student Wingsien päävarjon jousiapuvarjoista on todettu jousen päiden kiinnikkeiden löystymistä. Kyseessä ovat ne jousiapuvarjot, joissa jousen ylä- ja alapäät on suljettu vain yhdellä metalliholkilla. Holkin löystyessä jousen pää voi luiskahtaa irralleen, jolloin se voi reppua suljettaessa rikkoa apuvarjon kangasta tai pyöriä ulos apuvarjon kiinnikkeistä. Kerhoja kehotetaan seuraamaan kyseisten jousiapuvarjojen kiinnikkeiden tiukkuutta oppilasvarjoja pakattaessa. Mikäli holkki liikkuu sitä tunnusteltaessa, on kyseinen apuvarjo otettava pois käytöstä ja otettava yhteys maahantuojaan (Parasale Oy, puh. 02-2407460). 2/49 SERVICE BULLETIN: # FSI-SB-1004 DATE: JANUARY 16, 2000 SUBJECT: MAIN CONTAINER CLOSING GROMMETS STATUS: MANDATORY BACKGROUND: Following a recent main/reserve entanglement fatality in which a main parachute suspension line became trapped under a stainless steel rolled rim grommet (installed on the main number two flap), Fliteline Systems, Inc. is recommending that all grommets installed on Reflex main containers be inspected for flush seating. The grommet in question was seated to specification, however, we recommend that all grommets now be countersunk so any potential snag points may be eliminated. Additionally, we urge that all harness/containers of every make and type have their main container grommets inspected as it appears this phenomenon is not restricted to any one make or type of rig. Newer type main suspension lines are becoming ever smaller and it is felt that this problem may well be on the increase. As a result, we are urging that grommets on all types of rigs be checked. IDENTIFICATION: REFLEX harness/container PN RA01-1 () and RS01-1 () serial numbers 000001-001759. SERVICE BULLETIN: Visually inspect all main container grommets for any deformity, lifting or wear, looking for potential snag points. Pay particular attention to the depth that the grommet is sunk into the surrounding material. If the grommet looks raised in any way it will need to be set further in to the flap. Any grommet that will allow spectra 525 LB suspension line (CYPRES loop material) or greater under the edge of its rim is considered suspect and should be reset using the following procedure.

3/49 TOOLS REQUIRED: A standard size zero grommet setting tool base (female section only) and one flat surfaced steel head hammer. REPAIRMAN: Senior or Master rigger. COUNTERSINKING PROCEDURE: Position the affected grommet over the main body of a standard size zero grommet setting tool (female section) in the manner it would normally be set (be sure that the tool head is on a solid surface that will not absorb any of the energy from the setting procedure). Do not use the male part of the setting tool for this operation. Using a flat surface steel hammer begin to peen the grommet washer surface with moderate to heavy hammer blows (stopping every few blows to check the progress). Ensure that you strike the hammer flat and centered on the grommets surface, as careless blows may damage the grommet. A much flatter and more efficient result is obtained using just a flat steel hammer rather than the male portion of the setting tool. It has been observed that over striking stainless steel grommets using both parts of the tool can result in a sharp ridge forming on the inside of the grommet and that the tool itself can become worn or damaged. 10/49 PRODUCT GROUNDING & RECALL BULLETIN Issue Date: January 13, 1994 Bulletin Number: 2 Products Affected: ALL NOVA MAIN CANOPIES Statement: Effective immediately, we are advising all Nova main canopy owners not to jump their Nova canopies. We fully tested the Nova canopy before placing it on the market, and it performed safely during all of our testing. We are now aware that a few jumpers have suffered injuries or death while using the Nova. The reports that we have received are conflicting and we are unable to determine if the unexplained collapse of the Nova is due to gusty winds and ground turbulence or jumper error. Until we can discover what causes the problem (if a problem with the canopy exists), we are asking all skydivers to spread the word to all Nova owners to immediately refrain from jumping their Nova again. We are a small corporation with limited finances, and we cannot unconditionally recall and replace all Nova canopies. We also are aware that a number of Nova owners are completely satisfied with the Nova and would not wish to change it for a different product. We still advise these individuals not to jump their Nova canopies. Action to be taken: It is our desire to offer some compensation to those Nova owners who wish to return this product. Accordingly, those who are interested in a replacement are advised that Glide Path has designed a new line of zero-porosity canopies, using an airfoil which exhibits high performance while retaining the solid stability of other Glide Path products. We are making the following offer to all Nova owners: * Return your Nova to Glide Path and receive a 60% discount on our new zero porosity canopy. This offer is valid through April 30, 1994. 11/49 SERVICE BULLETIN DATE: January 3, 1994 # of Pages: 2 REFERENCE: SERVICE BULLETIN # PFISB: 9401 SUBJECT: SWIFT PLUS RESERVES with SPECTRA LINES must be inspected for possible faulty bartacks STATUS: This inspection is MANDATORY at the next repack/re-inspection or within 150 days of the issue date of this notice, whichever comes first IDENTIFICATION: All Swift Plus reserves manufactured by Para-Flite Inc with Spectra Line Sets prior to January 1, 1994 are subject to the requirements of this notice. BACKGROUND: A Swift Plus 225 reserve, serial # R7-2218, manufactured February 19, 1992, was found to have a faulty bartack at the outer D line cascade. The width of the bartack was too wide to catch the finger-trapped insertion of the cascade, allowing the cascade to be pulled free by hand. On the affected reserve parachute the A and C lines are continuous and the B and C lines are cascaded and fingertrapped into them. Therefore, the failure of this junction is not catastrophic and will not lead to a malfunction. Because we are unable to determine how this faulty bartack went undetected and because we are unable to state with certainty that there are no others like it, all affected reserve parachutes must be re-inspected as soon as possible, but no later then at the next repack cycle. Process and machinery changes put into affect will prevent recurrence of this problem on any reserve parachutes manufactured after January 1, 1994. SERVICE BULLETIN: All bartacks of the suspension line sets must be subjected to a visual inspection and compared to the enclosed drawing. Good bartacks will have a centered appearance and ample material on both sides of the stitches.

12/49 In the case of a defective bartack notify Para-Flite Inc immediately providing the serial number of the affected parachute and a description of the location of the bartack and the nature of the defect. If you are not sure, please call before cutting the existing bartack. The defective bartack may be replaced by any properly equipped and authorized repair facility and the bartack replacement costs can be invoiced or passed onto Para-Flite Inc. Alternatively the parachute may be sent to Para-Flite Inc for repair, where it will be repaired free of charge.
