My main research interests have been youth and religious change, religiosity and relation to the Church in Finland, relation to work and career orientation among Church employees and students in the field, Church membership and resignation from the Church, Church confirmation work and religious development and identity. Most of my research has been empirical, using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The main research projects I have been involved in the field of religious education are the following: 1. RESEARCH RELATED TO THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION AND CAREER PROCESSES Career motivation and work orientation among applicants for studies in theology, principal researcher (dissertation), 1997 2000 The research was based on surveys and interviews among applicants for university studies in theology in 1994 and 1997. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed. The research shows that motives for studying theology have changed: there are fewer of those who feel that they have been called by God. The calling is more often interpreted as something related to self-fulfillment. This is related to the changes in the background of the applicants: There are more of those who have no clear connection to church life than before. Research project: The identity formation and processes of becoming and growing as a theologian, director of the research project, 2009 2013 I am the director of a research project related to study processes in studying theology. This is partly a follow-up study of the research mentioned above, but also broadens the field of the study. Six researchers from the University of Helsinki and one from the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu) are involved in the project. The project is funded by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The project is planned to run until 2013. 2. RESEARCH ON YOUTH AND CONFIRMATION WORK Research project: The quality and effectiveness in confirmation work in Finland, principal researcher, 2001 2006: I have conducted a longitudinal study on the quality and effectiveness in confirmation work in Finland between 2001 2006. The research data consists of three sets of questionnaires, at the beginning of the confirmation period, at the end and five years later. The research shows that confirmation time can maintain and activate religious observance among young people and simultaneously prevent retreat from religious authority and faith in general. (202 pages) Research project Young people, confirmation and the future, director of the research project 2004-2009 I was the director of the research project Young people, confirmation and the future which started in 2004. The aim of the project was to get knowledge of the actual status of confirmation work and young people attending to it in Finland. One of the main research questions was to find out if the practices in confirmation work are in line with the aims and ideals stated in the confirmation plan, and what really happens in confirmation work from the point of views of different participants and leaders. The emphasis was in the qualitative research, and the research was mainly based on interviews and observations. We collected a large joint observational data from parishes with the help of students involved in the project. In all about 20 students from the University of Joensuu and Helsinki, Diaconia University of Applied Sciences and Sibelius Academy took part in the project. (398 pages) In 2007 the research project was linked into a large international project in which I was one of the core persons and also the leader of the Finnish study: Research project: Confirmation work in Europe, 2007 2010: member of the research group, director of the Finnish study Confirmation work in Europe was a comparative research project conducted in seven countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark). The research is based on a huge amount of data. In the participating countries about 20,000 young people and 2,000 workers answered questionnaires in the beginning and in the end of their confirmation time. The research followed the model of my personal research The Quality and experiences in confirmation work (2001-2006) presented above. The project gives valuable knowledge on the different practices, successful strategies and organizational models of confirmation work and youth work in different countries. The results show that there are many differences between the seven countries in practices, aims and experiences of the confirmation work. When the aims of the workers are analyzed, religious aims are the most important aims in confirmation work only in Norway and in Finland. From the confirmands perspective aims related to social activity are 2

regarded as more important than religious aims in all countries. The results also show that there are also differences between the countries when it comes to fulfilment of aims. When the religious results are analysed from confirmands perspective, Finland and Sweden differ from the other countries by having more confirmands with positive religious change. These are related to better satisfaction as the quality theories suggest, which in turn is related to a longer camp period than in other countries. RESEARCH ON YOUNG ADULTS, CHURCH AND FAITH Research project: Urban young adults and religion in Finland, 2004 2007: The research project on urban young adults was intended to increase and disseminate knowledge and understanding of the lives and life situations of young adults and their values and religiosity. The research was based on 1500 telephone interviews and 100 personal interviews among young adults living in the heart of Helsinki. Young adults can be seen as a group which assimilates novelties and then passes them on to others. Thus the present appearance of the religiosity among urban young adults can be taken as an indicator of the future development in the field of religion. The research shows that urban young adults stress the freedom of the individual, are self-directed and pursue authenticity. For the Church they are a challenging group. For only every fourth young adult faith and religion were at least fairly important. The culture of self-fulfillment, normativity of the individual and the culture of authenticity are driving them away from Church membership. If the Church is not perceived as something for me and as a community to whose values one can subscribe, the tendency to leave the Church is strong. Reasons for being a member of the Church are personal and the Church is required to provide meaningfulness from one s own personal perspectives. Quantitative data show beyond doubt that religious upbringing in homes is declining. This research aims to understand religious change by analyzing religious transmittance across and within generations. This is done by researching members of members of different generations within families. The research combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. The core of the research is the in-depth interviews among members of the same families (with members of different generations). We will also conduct a quantitative survey among the Finns (N=1000). The results will help to understand the religious change and the change in values that has been taking place in our society by investigating the changes under way at the centre of value transmission families. The research team consists of six members from Finland and the research is done in co-operation with an international research group.
