GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF FINNISH ICE HOCKEY ASSOCIATION IIHF World Championship ends another great hockey season. The event brings together best players and teams together with hockey fans, partners and media members from all over the world. Finnish Team, the Lions, have prepared carefully for this tournament. Like all participating teams, our aim is to capture the IIHF World Championship title and travel back home with gold medals. Although World Championship games were played in Bratislava already in 1992, this is the first time Slovakia hosts IIHF World Championship. Knowing how passionately and enthusiastically Slovakians feel about ice hockey, it s fair to expect we have an exceptional event ahead of us. Both Bratislava and Kosice will offer first class hockey on ice as well as celebration and memorable side events off the ice. On behalf of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association I want to wish all the participating teams success in the tournament may the best team win. Kalervo Kummola President, Finnish Ice Hockey Association Chairman, Local Organizing Committee for the 2012 IIHF World Championship PS. After Slovakia Finland and Sweden will join forces and together host two IIHF World Championships in a row. I wish you warmly welcome to Helsinki and Stockholm in 2012! 3
FINLAND S SIGHTS SET ON THE 15 th OF MAY In the next WC tournament in 1949 in Stockholm the Finnish team fared better winning two games out of four and placing 7th overall. In 1965 Tampere hosted the tournament as the Soviet Union took the gold medals. The Soviet team dominated the international competitions from 1963 to 1971 winning every WC and Olympic tournament held during that time. The very first IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship tournament was organized in Chamonix, France, Berlin, Germany and Vienna, Austria in 1930. That was the first IIHF tournament outside of the Olympics which featured North American teams. Finland participated in the separate World Championship tournament for the first time in 1939. The Finns were coached by Erkki Saarinen and the team lost all of their five games in the tournament by a goal differential of 5-25. 4 Antti Pihlström is looking to provide lots of energy to the Finnish team in Slovakia In the 1987 Sweden won the World Championship tournament held in Vienna, Austria and became the first country in 22 years outside of the Soviet Union or Czechoslovakia to win the gold. The 90s marked the fall of the Soviet Union and their previous dominance was a thing of the past as Sweden won the gold in 1991 and 1992. In the 1992 tournament Finland won its first World Championship medal as head-coach Pentti Matikainen led the team to a second-place finish. 1995 is a year no Finnish ice hockey fan will forget as the Finns won their first and only World Championship gold to date. Finland beat tournament host Sweden 4-1 in the finals with Ville Peltonen s hattrick. Although last year in Germany the Finns lost to champion Czech Republic in the quarterfinals placing sixth, this year the Finnish team is looking to play in the finals on the 15th of May in Bratislava and come back home with the gold. Väänänen played all but one game that season for the Coyotes potting 4 goals to combine for a total of 16 points. Väänänen spent the six following seasons as a core player in the NHL until he signed with Djurgården of the Swedish Elite League. Väänänen returned to the SM-Liiga and Jokerit for the 2010-11 season and now provides veteran leadership to the team as its captain. For the Minnesota Wild Mikko Koivu fits the bill perfectly. Koivu puts in massive amounts of work on both ends of the ice and despite his big defensive input, Koivu was able to score 17 goals and 62 points last season even though he missed 11 games due to injury. Mikko Koivu won the U18 World Championship alongside Jarkko Immonen and Tuomo Ruutu and has medaled in every international tournament he has participated in since. Koivu is looking to keep the streak going leading the Finnish Lions in Slovakia. Tuomo Ruutu has never shied away from physical play and likes to throw his body around a lot. Ruutu was second in number of hits in the 2010-11 NHL regular season with a whopping 309, which averages to three hits per game. Ruutu has suffered from his physical play, however, as he has missed a lot of games due to injury especially early in his NHL career. When it rained, it poured for Ruutu as he contemplated on retiring after the 2006 World Championships. Ruutu came back and after a couple of more seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. In Raleigh, North Carolina Ruutu has gotten healthy and has risen to a key player of the Hurricanes with the same recipe: playing hard and putting up points in the process. In the 2002-03 season he made his debut in the second highest Finnish League playing 40 games with 14 goals and 35 points, which warranted a call-up to Kärpät Oulu next season. On his first full SM-Liiga season Pesonen earned 30 points in 56 games, got rookie of the year honors and won the Finnish championship. After Pesonen s dominating last season in the SM- Liiga, in which he scored 78 points in 56 games, was selected to as a league All-Star and got his fourth Finnish league title, he headed to North-America. Although Pesonen was drafted by Anaheim, it was the Pittsburgh Penguins who signed him to a two-way contract. On his first season in the AHL Pesonen lit up the league netting 82 points in 70 games. Next season Pesonen signed with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL, scored 25 points in 42 games and capped off the season with another championship, this time the KHL s Gagarin Cup. Jani Lajunen made his SM-Liiga debut with Blues Espoo as a 17-yearold in 2007-08, but spent the season playing in the juniors. The Nashville Predators drafted him in the following summer on the last round as the 201st pick overall. Playing 25 games for Blues the next season and scoring his first SM-Liiga goal, Lajunen has increased his ice-time ever since. In 2009-10 he was a key player for Blues as the matured Lajunen played physically scoring six goals and adding nine assists for 15 points in 46 games. This was enough for the Predators as they signed a three-year contract with Lajunen. He spent the first year of the contract with Blues and played the full 60 games in the regular season as well as all 18 games in the playoffs where Blues went all the way to the finals but fell to HIFK Helsinki. Lajunen was one of the key players of his team with 24 points in the regular season and 10 in the playoffs.

Pyörälä was a defensive player in the start of his career but developed later into a first line player. He especially developed a good chemistry with Janne Pesonen while both were playing for Kärpät Oulu. That good chemistry resulted in three SM-Liiga championships before Pyörälä went to Timrå IK that plays in the Swedish Elite League. Pyörälä was so impressive on his two-year campaign with Timrå that he was invited by the NHL team Philadelphia Flyers to their training camp before the 2009-10 season. To the surprise of many, Pyörälä impressed the Flyers coaching staff and earned an opening night roster spot. Pyörälä spent the majority of the season in the AHL playing for the Adirondack Phantoms. Last season Pyörälä played for Västra Frölunda HC in the Swedish Elite League and posted 23 points in 47 games. Niko Kapanen is a player of many roles. Because of his quickness and responsibility he can be used in a defensive role and as a PK specialist. In that role, however, Kapanen s greatest assets, his high hockey IQ and good vision, goes to waste. He excelled when playing in the SM- Liiga and showed in the 2002-03 and 2005-06 seasons that he can play his game in the NHL. However Kapanen was then traded first to Atlanta and subsequently to Phoenix, which had an impact on his point totals. Kapanen joined Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL for the 2008-09 season and struck gold as Kazan took consecutive league titles. Kapanen is one of Kazan s key players and is coming to the WCs to spark the Finnish Lions offence. ICEPEAK yhteistyössä Suomen jääkiekkoliiton kanssa ICEPEAK LEIJONIEN MATKASSA www.icepeak.fi

It was not until the 2009-10 season with Pelicans, Lahti when Aaltonen started to realize the immense talent he has always had. Aaltonen lit up the Finnish SM-Liiga with 28 goals, which was tied for the league lead, and 49 points in 56 games on the Pelicans team that finished 12th. Aaltonen was not shell-shocked from the change of scenery and posted 20 goals and 39 points in 54 regular season games, which was second most from Metallurg players. There is no doubt Jesse Joensuu has the talent to be a regular NHL player, but it was not until this season the former teen star of the Finnish SM-Liiga is exhibiting that talent. Joensuu made his SM-Liiga debut as the youngest player ever at just 15 years of age and after his breakout season in 2007-08, when he scored 35 points in 56 games for Ässät Pori he decided to head to the New York Islanders AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
