Tervetuloa ANTI-festivaalille 2009! Viimeisen seitsemän vuoden aikana ANTI-festivaalin taiteilijat ovat uudelleenmääritelleet Kuopion kaupunkitiloja monivivahteisella ja inspiroivalla esitysten ja pitkäkestoisten teosten kokoelmalla. Yleisö saapuu Kuopioon, nappaa kartan käteensä ja kulkee teoksesta toiseen taideteosten toimiessa kiintopisteinä pitkän, yllättävän nautittavan kävelymatkan varrella. Tänä vuonna päätimme tuoda esiin kävelyä itseään liikkumista inhimilliseen tahtiin omassa elinympäristössämme. Halusimme ANTI-festivaalin tulevan ulos kaduille näyttämään, miten taiteilijat hyödyntävät kävelyä töissään. Teema tuntui sopivan hyvin tänne sauvakävelyn luvattuun maahan ja Kuopion kaupunkiin, joka tarjoaa kävelemiselle upeat puitteet. Esittelemme nyt sarjan kävelyteoksia, joita ovat luoneet joukko maailman mielenkiintoisimpia taiteilijoita. Yksi heistä kävelee maratonin Kuopion ostoskeskuksessa, toinen saapuu Kuopioon laulaen käveltyään 160 km Kiuruvedeltä, kolmas antaa tuulen kuljettaa häntä tuntematonta polkua pitkin. Taiteilijat johdattavat meitä sekä virtuaalisten maisemien että todellisten tuoksuvien parfyymiosastojen halki. ANTI-festivaalin kunniaksi luodaan uusi oikopolku ja koko Suomi kutsutaan aarteenetsintään, joka johtaa meitä sinne tänne taidekätkön perässä. Nämä ja monta muuta teosta tarkastelevat kävelyä sen kaikissa muodoissa, nautintoineen ja kipuineen. Kun kengät potkaistaan jalasta, on aika rentoutua. Käy festivaalikeskus Introssa syömässä tai juomassa ja jos virtaa vielä riittää, vaikka tanssimassa kahtena klubi-iltana. Mikä onkaan parempaa kun päivän kävelyn päätteeksi, antaa jonkun muun laittaa ruokaa? Muista varata paikka Kaupungintalolle, jossa alkaa lauantaina klo 21 unohtumaton tanssin, viinin ja hyvän ruoan ilta. Welcome to ANTI 2009! For the past seven years of the ANTI Festival artists have reconfigured Kuopio s urban, suburban and rural spaces with a truly eclectic and inspiring mix of performance and installation. Audiences arrive in Kuopio, grab a map and begin walking from project to project; the artworks functioning as nodal points on what becomes a surprisingly enjoyable long walk through the city. This year we foreground that process, the process of walking, of putting one foot in front of the other and moving at human-pace through the land in which we live. It seems fitting in a country so fond of Nordic walking and in a city surrounded by forests and lakes, for ANTI to take to the streets and look at how artists use walking in their work. So we present a series of walks created by some of the world s most exciting artists; a full marathon will be walked through the city s commercial space, an artist will arrive singing into Kuopio, having walked 160km from Kiuruvesi, another will be blown by the wind on an unknowable path, artists will guide us on tours of virtual space and of the very real, aromatic, space of the city s perfumery counters. A new path will be created in honour of ANTI and the entire country will be invited on a treasure hunt that will take us high and low in search of buried treasure. These projects, and many others begin to show walking in all of its forms, with all of its pleasure and pain. When we ve hung up our boots there s plenty to relax us visit Intro, the Festival Centre to eat, drink and even dance if you have the energy, at our two club nights. And after a day walking what s better than being cooked for? Make sure you visit the Town Hall on Saturday at 9pm for your pass to a quite extraordinary night of dance, wine and fine food. Stephen Hodge johdattaa yleisön lyhyelle kävelymatkalle, jossa voi katsoa Kallaveden yli kohti Saaristokaupunkia. Hodgen avatarhahmo Drifter Rhode johdattaa toiselle kävelylle virtuaalimaiseman läpi, josta voi etsiä yhteyksiä reaalimaailman Kuopioon. SLaaristokaupunki esitetään yhdelle ihmiselle kerrallaan. Esitykseen ei tarvita kokemusta Second Life:sta. Olen Wrights & Sites-ryhmän ydinjäsen. Ryhmä koostuu brittiläisistä taiteilija-tutkijoista, joilla on erityinen suhde paikkaan, kaupunkiin, maisemaan ja kävelyyn. Avattareni on Drifter Rhode, joka kuratoi Arts Council England:n rahoittamaa tilausteosten, työpajojen ja esitelmien ohjelmaa nimeltä 2ND LIVE. 2ND LIVE tutkii live-esitystä Second Life:ssä. SLaaristokaupunki-teoksessa kohtaavat nämä kaksi työn aluetta, kaupunki ja kävely. Olen kiinnostunut näkemään, mitä tapahtuu kun kävelypohjainen työtapa siirretään reaalimaailmasta Second Life:en. SLaaristokaupunki In Second Life, the 3D online digital archipelago, space is discontinuous and walking is anachronistic. Stephen Hodge will lead you on a short walk to an intimate space, looking over Lake Kallavesi towards Saaristokaupunki. Here, his avatar Drifter Rhode will accompany you on a second walk, this time through a virtual landscape, where together you will search for connections back to the Real Life Kuopio. SLaaristokaupunki is for one person at a time. Previous experience in the Second Life environment is not required. I am a core member of Wrights & Sites, a group of UK-based artist-researchers with a special relationship to site, city/landscape and walking. My avatar, Drifter Rhode, curates 2ND LIVE, an Arts Council England funded programme of commissions, workshops and presentations which aims to explore live performance in the Second Life world. SLaaristokaupunki marks a convergence of these two areas of work, and I am interested in what might be discovered through shifting walkingbased practices from Real Life to Second Life. Ensimmäiset kolme päivää Gosling kävelee yksin, mutta neljäntenä päivänä yleisö voi liittyä Goslingin seuraan hänen saapuessa laulaen Kuopioon. Hello Over four days, Gosling will walk (the) 160km to Kuopio from Kiuruvesi. En route he ll take audio recordings and create a song from the journey s rhythm. The first three days will be walked by the artist alone but on the fourth day you re invited to join him as he enters Kuopio, singing. Musical instruments are welcome, except flutes. A sound work, created from edited sections of the audio captured on the walk will be available for download from www.antifestival.com on 5th October 2009. Since 2000 I ve made extensive use of hitchhiking and walking as art-productive processes, variously exploring relationships of site/consciousness/work. Hello brings together and advances numerous preoccupations and lines of enquiry, encompassing transience, unpredictability, fleeting encounter, the filtered-out and unnoticed, the discreetly extraordinary, repetition and rhythm, the made-up song as companion, interior/exterior space, the flexibility and plasticity of time, detached sound as enhancer of the absent familiar, detached sound as conjuror of the enigmatic. Taiteilijan keho tutkii, esittää sekä tanssii ilmaisten tulen vaaraa ja runollisuutta. Gwendoline Robinin töissä on välittömyyttä sekä suhde nykyhetkeen, joka syntyy räjähdyksen äkillisyydestä, tulen ytimestä, savun haihtuvuudesta. Se kohtaa meidät yllättyneisyydellä, pelolla, vaaralla, helpotuksella, mutta myös ihmetyksellä ja huumorilla. Delaunois Gwendoline Robin places the object and the body in space to create ever more complex installations and performances; the object responds to space, movement responds to fire and light responds to the sound of the explosion. The artist s body can explore, perform and dance with the danger and the poetry of fire. There is immediacy in Gwendoline Robin s work; a relationship with the present moment given by the suddenness of the explosion, the very essence of fire, the evanescence of smoke. It confronts us with surprise, fear, danger, relief, and with wonder, too, and humour. Taiteilija Gwendoline Robin Belgiasta ohjaa lapsia kollektiivisen yhteistaideteoksen tekemisessä. Lapset tekevät mielikuvituksellisia alustoja ilotulitteille. Lasten tekemät alusta kootaan yhteen ja sunnuntai-iltana ANTI-festivaali päättyy unohtumattoman hienoon esitykseen, jossa taiteilija Gwendoline Robin sytyttää alustoilla olevat ilotulitteet hienoksi kokonaisuudeksi. Työpajan aikana lapset eivät ole tekemisissä ilotulitteiden kanssa. Työpajaan mahtuu kerrallaan 20 iältään 6-12-vuotiasta lasta. See the workshop performance, ANTI 2009 s closing event, at 7.30pm on Sunday evening at the harbour market place ANTI Festival 2009 offers two children s workshops. Belgium Artist Gwendoline Robin will work with children in producing a collaborative piece of art. The childen will create imaginative launch-pads for a firework display. The launch-pads will be used in an unforgetable closing performance to this year s festival as Robin litearlly sets the children s work alight! Particpating children will at no time come into contact with fireworks, either during the workshop or the performance. The workshop can accommodate 20 children at a time, aged 6-12. Pe 25.9. klo 10 / Fri 25.9. 10am Antti Laitinen (FI) Walk The Line Walk The Line -teoksessa Laitinen kävelee muotokuvansa Kuopioon hyöyntäen GPS-navigaattoria. Laitinen tulostaa ensin muotokuvansa Kuopion kartalle ja suunnistaa sitten kävellen muotokuvan ääriviivoja pitkin kaupungin halki. Navigaattori tallentaa Laitisen matkan piirtäen hänen muotokuvansa kaupungin kaduille. Laitisen muotokuvan muodostumista voi seurata osoitteessa www.antifestival.com. Laitisen muotokuvan reaaliaikaista etenemistä seurataan perjantain seminaarissa. Teoksissani asetan itseni erilaisiin absurdeihin tilanteisiin, joissa heijastuu ironinen ja omakohtainen näkökulmani sosiaalisiin ja kulttuuri-ilmiöihin. Absurdius syntyy vakavuudesta, jolla teos esitetään. Taiteeni sijoittuu performanssin ja visuaalisen taiteen välimaastoon. Luon esityksiä, jotka joskus ottavat valokuvan, videon ja/ tai veistoksen muodon. Olen kiinnostunut muuntamaan fyysisiä tekoja taiteeksi ja tässä suhteessa työtapani keskittyy hyvin paljon itse prosessiin. Walk The Line In Walk The Line Laitinen will walk his portrait onto Kuopio with the help of a satellite positioning device (GPS). Laitinen will first print his portrait onto a map of Kuopio, orientate himself according to the lines of the portrait and then begin to walk though the city. The GPS will log his journey drawing his portrait across the city s streets. Watch Laitinen s portrait develop at www.antifestival.com. The portrait s development will also be shown during the seminar on Friday. In my performances, I place myself in different absurd situations that underlie an ironic and personal take on various social and cultural phenomena. The absurdity comes from the seriousness with which it is performed. My artistic practice is located between performance art and visual art. I make performances that are sometimes translated into photographs, videos and/or sculptural work. Taiteilijat käyttävät Geocachingia nykytaiteen esittämiseen ja levittämiseen. Heidän työnsä puhuttelee suoraan kahta yhteisöä: nykytaide- ja Geocaching-yhteisöä. Geocaching eli geokätköily on maailmanlaajuista toimintaa, missä osanottajat tekevät kätköjä, jonka GPS koordinaatit he sitten julkaisevat internetissä. Toiset osanottajat voivat niiden avulla etsiä ja lopulta löytää kätkön. ANTI-festivaalia varten Hájek a Porcal on haudannut kätköjä eri puolille Suomea. Taiteilijoina työskentelemme erikseen, mutta joskus kohtaamme projekteissa, joissa uskomme erilaisten lähestymistapojemme synnyttävän jotain uutta. Hájek a Porcal Hájek a Porcal is a collaboration between two Czech artists who use Geocaching for the presentation and distribution of contemporary art. Their work talks directly to two social communities; contemporary art and the growing online Geocaching community. Geocaching is a global activity where people hide a cache somewhere in the world and then publish its GPS coordinates online for other people to hunt and eventually find. For ANTI 2009 Hájek a Porcal have buried caches across of Finland. Each cache contains a small piece of contemporary Czech art. As artists we work separately, but sometimes we meet on the same project when we feel our different art approaches will be multiplied and will positively influence the result. These projects are typically diversions from our individual practices. The artworks produced from our collaboration are mostly site-specific projects in which we attempt to create new relationships among people, places or situations. Nadeau kulkee toistuvasti kahden pisteen väliä pienellä nurmikolla kymmenen päivän ajan. Tämä päivittäinen huomaamaton esitys luo nurmelle näkyvän polun, jota kutsutaan nimellä oikopolku : polku, jonka jalankulkijat luovat, jotta voivat paremmin liikkua tietyssä tilassa. Anonymous Collaboration Nadeau will create a shortcut for urban pedestrians by adopting a daily schedule of repeatedly walking between two points across a small grassy division. This daily discreet performance will create a visible path in the grass, commonly known as a desire path : a path pedestrians create to better traverse a particular space. Nadeau hopes she will inspire others to follow the shortcut, thereby enforcing its presence. A small sign will be posted at the project's site, with the invitation: please walk. Join Nadeau in creating the path from Wednesday 23rd September. Please help the artist with the work throughout the festival and return for the path s grand opening on Sunday 27th September 3pm. City streets and structural barriers present an ensemble of possibilities and interdictions to the urban pedestrian. Occasionally however, it is the pedestrian who creates the city, inventing pathways and creating shortcuts to suit his needs. Like animals drawn to follow the tracks of the herd, we will instinctually take the beaten track rather than the paved road. Two founding members of La Pocha Nostra, Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Roberto Sifuentes along with a 3rd European member, will colaborate with three Finnish artists on a series of public performance art interventions. On Friday and Saturday the ephemeral crew will visit various public sites in the city and stage humorous and provocative performance interventions. The goal is to asses the public s tolerance for otherness and notions of performance art while incorporating them into the piece and at the same time to generate a hit and run mythology. La Pocha Nostra is an ever morphing trans-disciplinary arts organization. Traipsing(ing) Premiere of the collective Traipsing(ing) track on Sunday 27/9 at 6pm in the Festival Centre Intro Many of us sing, hum or whistle as we walk. Whether it s a ubiquitous pop song or our own aria, our steps are guided by inner melodies. With Traipsing(ing) a choral song is composed using cumulative recordings that participants create spontaneously while walking a predetermined path. Participants are given a map & a recording device. Listening to a bed track while walking, they press record and join in when they like. O Hara will then edit the tracks to compose what she promises will be a collaborative masterpiece! Once you ve made your recording come back to Intro, the Festival Centre at 6pm on Sunday to hear the premier of the collective Traipsing(ing) track. I create events that examine connections in the context of the spectacle. Improvisation is a favourite tool as it carries the omnipresent possibility of error and failure, it creates circumstances whereby the spectator is refocused with presentminded awareness. As an auto-didact, I am interested in the principles of do-ityourself and availabism. I work with sound because it is an extro-visual medium that allows the spectators imaginations to run wild. My recent obsession is to sort out ways to remove the performer from the performance. 14

Archsuit sopii yhteen arkkitehtuurin kanssa tehden kehon ja rakennetun ympäristön suhteesta vaikuttavan. Osanottajat voivat pukea Archsuit-puvun ylleen ja sopia niiden avulla yhteen erilaisten kuopiolaisten paikkojen kanssa. Kiertäessämme paikasta toiseen keskustelemme kaupunkisuunnittelun kehityksestä sekä arkkitehtuurista suhteessa ihmisen mukavuudenhaluun ja sosiaaliseen läsnäoloon. Minua kiinnostavat turvallisuuden diskurssit ja niiden ilmeneminen jokapäiväisessä kaupunkien ja asuinalueiden maisemassa. Archsuit Archsuit is a suite of sculptural apparatuses that enable the body to counter hard surfaces of urban spaces using soft wearable forms. Archsuit corresponds to specific architecture, making the relationship between the body and the built environment spectacular. Participants can wear an Archsuit in order to fit into sites around Kuopio. As we tour and perform each site we will discuss the development of urban planning and architecture as it pertains to human comfortability and social engagement. I am interested in discourse of safety and security as manifested in the day-to-day landscape of cities, towns and neighbourhoods. My work is an exploration into the aesthetic manifestations of the built environment, and the relationships they could indicate. The interstices of affect and human landscapes have propelled me to work in multiple forms and materials, which include customized jogging suits, performative photographs, fantastical proposals for public spaces, and street posters. In Live Windwalks Knowles sets off walking, guided solely by the wind. For this piece he has created an extraordinary wind vane mounted to a helmet; helmets will be available for members of the audience too, who can join Knowles or simply watch as he meanders though the city blown one way then the other as the wind changes and falters within the cities form. Chance plays a crucial part in my work, akin to scientific experimentation, a situation is engineered in which the work is produced by factors beyond my control. It is the wind, rippling of water, motion of a vehicle, postmen, insects or players of a game that unwittingly determine the outcome of the work. The impulses of each participant propel the improvisational piece onward. The piece strives for a kind of democracy which includes not only the performers, but the audience as well. Streams fights to reject hierarchies and any predetermined, or given roles. The audience and performers share an entire night like a dinner party would. Everything is plentiful: there is much dance, much music, there is food in abundance and they never run out of wine. We met for the first time in Prague in 2004 and have been collaborating ever since. Gradually our working relationship has turned into friendship, and friendship into being soulmates. Life, friendship and working processes have been inextricably intertwined. We are bound by the desire to work in multi-artistic productions, in interaction with other artists, without hierarchy. As performers we wish to bring a whole person on stage so that all the manifold layers are on view: intellectual, emotional, even sexual, rational with the irrational. Our working process, to which we invited a musician and a lighting designer, has included deliberation of the value set of our art, its aims, means of expression and political nature. The performance begins at 9pm and lasts approximately 6 hours. At 9pm you ll be given a wristband which allows you to go in and out of the space. Regin Igloria (US) The Puijo Hill 3-Day The Puijo Hill 3-Day on pitkäkestoinen performanssivaellus, joka alkaa Puijon Tornin, Kuopion kuuluisan nähtävyyden juurelta. The Puijo Hill 3-Day The Puijo Hill 3-Day is a durational performance hike that will begin at the base of Puijo Ridge, the famous landmark of Kuopio. The artist encourages others to join him as he spends three days hiking up and down the hill. Anyone may join the cause, much like an organized fundraising walk. All registered participants will be issued a bib number to wear during the hike and given a commemorative embroidered patch as a souvenir of the experience. My work is a study in humanistic movement found within the natural environment, mostly of the kind experienced among the privileged in the travel and tourism industry. In my performance hikes, I see walking as a way to interpret the struggle, challenge, and opposition encountered in everyday life. These works embrace an athletic tone, as if taking on the tedium of training and exercising. I constantly ask, How well, how fast, how long and how much better can one handle the hard work?'" Each flick book animates the way ahead, playfully compelling the participant through unexpected gaps in the landscape; investigating what is behind and underneath; building a sense of excitement and trepidation that lends visionary intensity to sights and objects found there. I am interested in the act of walking, in how it brings our focus to the very edge of our senses, amplifying the landscape and triggering dream-like powers of locomotion, of vision. My work follows our desire to walk the gaps between buildings, over waste ground or through breaks in the trees to find places we feel ourselves alone. It probes the suggestion: 'Here I am safe from being seen, but not from what I may come upon. This performance is for small groups or one person at a time. The walk takes 45 minutes. NOTE!
