Wastewater collectuion and treatment in the Helsinki capital area Citywater seminar 20.03.2013 Tommi Fred
HSY HSY provides waste and water management services for the more than one million residents of the Helsinki metropolitan area. In addition, it produces information on, for example, air quality, the climate and housing. HSY's nearly 800 employees work efficiently to make the Helsinki area an environmentally responsible metropolitan area and to ensure that acting in an environmentally friendly fashion is made easy to all residents of the region. HSY was formed by consolidating the waterworks of Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen and Vantaa as well as the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council's waste management, and regional and environmental information services. HSY began its operations on 1 January 2010.

Sewer system in the metropolitan area Wastewater treatment in the metropolitan area has been centralised in two plants Combined sewers leading both wastewater and rainwater to the wastewater treatment plant are used in Helsinki city centre separate sewers are used elsewhere Rock tunnels are a central part of the branch sewer system There are also about 550 wastewater pumping stations in the HSY area 12.5.2011 22.3.2013 4
Centralised wastewater treatment The wastewater in the Helsinki, eastern Vantaa and Central Uusimaa areas is treated at the Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant. The wastewater of Espoo and western Vantaa is treated at the Suomenoja plant. The nutrient levels are clearly lower than required in environmental permits Viikinmäki Wastewater Treatment Plant Suomenoja Wastewater Treatment Plant
Viikinmäki WWTP extension Extension of biological process by 12 % Treatment capacity from 800 000 person to 900 000 person Construction 2013-2014 Investment cost 8.1 M 6
Blominmäki WWTP New treatment plant for serving west side of the sewer area Underground plant with higher capacity and more efficient wastewater treatment Treatment design values: Nitrogen 5 mg/l > 90 % reduction Phosphorus 0,2 mg/l > 96 % reduction Project started 2005 General design completed Detail design 2012-2015 Construction 2015-2020 Estimated investment cost 290 M including wastewater tunnels 7

Wastewater collection Extension of sewer network is constantly done (70 km new network annually) Yearly 10 000 new persons are connected to HSY sewer systems in urban areas Major part of the network have been built 1960-1970 s Old network demands very much renovation in the future years Investments for wastewater collection systems are 40 M /annually There is 12 000 persons not connected to sewer in HSY area 1600 person will be connected during next 10 years by investing 8 M for sewer during that time
Sewer network overflows 2010-11 Overflows from pumping stations and from network directly On the separate sewer network area typical reason is pumping station malfunction Durinf the extreme flow conditions it is some cases capacity which is limiting factor Combined sewer overflows in city center was 520 000 m 3 in two years (overflow has 5 % wastewater so amount of real sewage overflow was 26 000 m 3 ) Ylivuoto Toiminta Kapasiteetti Source City Amount Malfunction Capacity Kohde Kaupunki (m3) häiriö vajaus Riistatie, JVP57 Espoo 5 x Rusthollarinkatu 9, JVP10 Espoo 11 420 x x Kuusiniemi 6, JVP 36 Espoo 1 005 x Haapaniementie Espoo 200 x Markkinakatu Espoo 150 x Arttelikuja 5 Espoo 60 x Hyljekoukku 3 Espoo 60 x Hyljelahti Espoo 50 x Tyrskyranta 4, JVP45 Espoo 50 x Reviisorinkatu 6 Espoo 15 x Kolmirannantie, JVP 110 Espoo 12 x Mätäpuro (Kivihaan kohdalla) Helsinki 15 x Pukinmäen pumppaamo Helsinki 840 x Tavastkullantien risteys, jvp Vantaa 900 x Pitkäsentien jvp Vantaa 5 x Vantaan pumppaamot Vantaa 120 x x Yhteensä 14 907 Ylivuoto Toiminta Kapasiteetti Source City Amount Malfunction Capacity Kohde Kaupunki (m3) häiriö vajaus Perkkaan puisto Espoo 10 x Hirvisuontie 2 Espoo 20 x Koukkutie, JVP35 Espoo 70 x x Kuusiniemi 6, JVP 36 Espoo 30 x Engelin Puistotie, JVP154 Espoo 64 x x Kolmirannantie, JVP110 Espoo 6 x Kuninkaankartano, JVP125 Espoo 10 x Histantie 6, JVP193 Espoo 15 x Rusthollarinkatu 9, JVP10 Espoo 100 x Hylkeenpyytäjäntie 6, JVP52 Espoo 30 x Lasihytti, JVP59 Espoo 30 x Leppäsillantie, JVP29 Espoo 30 x Pukinmäen pumppaamo Helsinki 7 500 x Mustikkamaan uimaranta Helsinki - x Vänrikinkuja 1 Vantaa 20 x Askiston pumppaamo Vantaa 80 x Miekkatie 39 Vantaa 100 x Katriina, Knaapinkuja 12 Vantaa 90 x Ylästöntie Vantaa 60 x Ollaksentien jvp Vantaa 227 x Jokivarren pumppaamo Vantaa 490 x x Yhteensä 8 982
