2 Rural area called Eastern Finland Eastern Finland consists of three regions: South Savonia, North Savonia and North Karelia Population , which is 10,5 % Finland s total population Youth amount (10-24 year) is 17,3 % Half of them are living in three center cities of Eastern Finland (Joensuu, Kuopio, Mikkeli) Eastern Finland is getting older

4 Background of Youth Barometer The Youth Barometer of Eastern Finland was conducted as a survey in 2010 and 2011 The recipients came from three regions of Eastern Finland: South Savonia, North Savonia and North Karelia These regions were selected because on a bureaucratic level issues concerning young people are treated within the unity of these three regions. Data about wellbeing was needed.

5 Youth Barometer of Eastern Finland Serves the purposes of monitoring and estimation of young people s wellbeing and the development of youth policy (Municipality Act 1996, Act of Children s Protection 2007, Youth Act 2006) Produces important local and areal knowledge by acknowledging the special features of Eastern Finland knowledge

6 Youth Barometer of Eastern Finland Number of recipients: 2067 (2010), 1676 (2011), sample was well representative Data gathered by Webropol tool Institutions participating in the survey: basic education (ninth-graders), upper secondary vocational education, universities of applied sciences, universities and youth workshops

Career: better and more interesting employment opportunities Services: better public transportation networks, municipal services and leisure opportunities Pleasant and safe living environment Following one's own path: desire for independence and adventures Grass is greener on the other side following friends, better services of the other municipality, bad reputation of the current place of residence

14 How do you young people perceive Eastern Finland? Community: people care about each other, and young people are perceived positively Introverted: narrow-minded, stagnant and backward On the other hand open-minded: international and multicultural Humane: safe, child-friendly and close to nature.
