The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, TIAS, is part of the University of Turku. TIAS promotes cutting-edge university research in the humanities and social sciences. Turku institute for Advanced Studies, TIAS Annual Report 2010 & 2011
Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, TIAS The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, TIAS, was launched with funding from the Consortium comprising the University of Turku and Turku School of Economics. The goal has been to establish TIAS as an integral, and growing part of the University of Turku. TIAS receives its main funding from the University of Turku. Futher subtantial funding has been provided by the University Foundation of Turku and the Foundation for Economic Education. The purpose of the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies is to promote cutting-edge university research in the humanities and social sciences. This includes studies in the arts and literature, business studies, cultural studies, economics, education, human geography, history, law, linguistics, languages, philosophy, political science, psychology, logopedics, social policy, social work, sociology and research methodology, and their equivalents. TIAS selects its researchers through an international competition, which is open to all researchers in the respective fields. Researchers at TIAS work in a research environment of a high international standard. The Board for TIAS selects applicants on the basis of an evaluation by external experts. In the selection process, particular attention is paid to the quality of the candidates research proposal. The researchers are appointed for fixed-term positions at the University of Turku. Teaching activities comprise five percent of their annual work load of 1600 hours. The TIAS appoints scholars from junior Postdoctoral Researchers to senior Collegium Researchers. The new three-year period starts in 2012. During the application round in 2011, during which the applications were subjected to a strict international evaluation, TIAS received 126 high quality applications to its 10 positions. Of these applications, 19 were submitted by researchers with their affiliation outside Finland. TIAS Board The Board for TIAS is responsible for the strategic planning of the collegium, follow up the financial situation of TIAS, organising the application and review process as well as other TIAS activities. The Board selects applicants on the basis of an evaluation by external professor level experts. The TIAS Board: Professor Marja Vauras (chair, part-time research leader), Faculty of Education, University of Turku Professor Eija Suomela-Salmi, Faculty of Humanities, University of Turku (vice-chair) Professor Markus Granlund, Turku School of Economics, University of Turku Professor Heikki Hämäläinen, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Turku Professor Joel Kivirauma, Faculty of Education, University of Turku Professor Auvo Kostiainen, Faculty of Humanities, University of Turku Academy Professor Anne Kovalainen, Turku School of Economics, University of Turku Professor Jukka Mähönen, Faculty of Law, University of Turku Professor Veli-Matti Ritakallio, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Turku Professor Veli-Pekka Viljanen, Faculty of Law, University of Turku 2
The Board held six meetings in 2010 and further six 2011. TIAS has also a part-time coordinator who works as the secretary of the board, participates in the TIAS researcher meetings and organises the seminars with the researchers. The first TIAS coordinator was Docent Ulla Hytti followed in November 2010 by Phil. Lic. Kimi Kärki. Collegium Researchers: The purpose is to offer researchers an opportunity to develop the competence required for the most demanding research posts or other expert positions after the postdoctoral research stage. The requirements for the post of Collegium Researcher include successful postdoctoral publishing and other scientific work. Researchers are expected to have ambitious research plans aimed at scientific breakthrough. During 2010 and 2011, TIAS had five Collegium Researchers: Mika Kallioinen, School of History, Culture and Arts Studies (Finnish History), University of Turku, mika.kallioinen[at]utu.fi Medieval Trade and Institutions. TIAS activities The TIAS researchers organise joint lunches and research seminars on a regular basis. The aim of these meetings is to engage in multidisciplinary discussion between the researchers and to identify areas of mutual interest. The meetings have also been an important forum for the TIAS researchers to discuss and reflect upon both philosophical and pragmatic issues with regard to conducting research and operating in the new TIAS community. TIAS researchers held ten such meetings in 2010 and ten in 2011. The variety of the TIAS activities ranges from these closed meetings to public seminars directed for all high level researchers in the cross-disciplinary and critical manner. During 2010 and 2011, special emphasis has been given for research seminars which deal with both methodological issues and the realities of high quality research clusters. The TIAS researchers have contributed to different research activities including publications, organization of and presentations in scientific and other seminars and conferences as well as networking activities including research visits to international universities. The researchers have also contributed to teaching and supervising of theses. Two projects funded by Academy of Finland have been led by TIAS researchers during the period (Lydia Kokkola 400.000 euros and Pekka Länsineva 550.000 euros). The TIAS researchers have also been active in contributing to the societal influence of the university by giving statements to governmental bodies and giving virtual and live presentations to the general public. Three of the Collegium Researchers (Lydia Kokkola, Pekka Länsineva, and Taina Syrjämaa) are or will be Professors after their TIAS period.
