Visited another part of the country in which you live? Named the 2011 European Capital of Culture, Turku may offer just that opportunity not only to international tourists but to many Finns living in other parts of Finland or abroad. Since 1985, the European Union designates a city each year to represent the diversity of European culture. Turku and Tallinn were selected as the Capitals of Culture for 2011. The cities receive funding to organize a series of events throughout the year, often resulting in significant cultural and socio-economic development for the area. When I lived in Paris, I learned the art of discovering where you live thanks to an energetic French couple. Although they were born and raised in France, this pair never ceased to learn about their own country. Every month we would pick a town on a map and drive to see what we could find. Through these ventures, we were exposed to breathtaking landscapes, historic architecture, regional foods, eclectic characters and local traditions. Because of their sense of adventure, I was exposed to areas unknown to most tourists and got to know the real France. I realized that many of us do not take the time to acquaint ourselves with the communities which exist in our own backyards. Turku will kick-off its year of culture on 15 January and continue to showcase various acts and exhibits each month. This will provide an opportunity for Finns to discover their own "backyard". Furthermore, attending cultural events has been recognized in Finland as having positive effects on the general well-being of the population. This belief has been reinforced by the recent decision of the Board of Health Care and Social Services in Turku to provide doctors in Turku with free tickets to the Capital of Culture 2011 shows, to be "prescribed" during medical visits! (www.turku2011.fi/en/media/press_releases) If you cannot visit Turku this year, remember that you can still go on a cultural holiday within your reach. You do not need to travel far and you do not need to plan. Just hop in your car and embrace what surrounds you. The next issue of the newsletter will be published in April 2011. Elämänopas kuvaa naiseksi kasvamista, naisen elämänkaarta, toista aikuisuutta, seksuaalisuutta ja hankalia tunteita välillä palautuen siihen miten Montrealissa vietetty aika vaikutti kirjailijan omaan elämään. Toinen entinen montrealinsuomalainen Eric Sorila- Rothberg (Eero Sorila) on lähettänyt uuden kirjansa Green Mattress Under The Stars. Epätavallinen matkakirja alkaa pikkupojan seikkailulla Jyväskylän Touruhovissa ja jatkuu Sudburystä Montrealiin, missä nuori Eero jakeli muunmuassa The Gazettea. Vancouveriin lopulta muuttanut valokuvaaja seikkailee 30 eri maassa Etelämantereelta Samoalle, Pirunsaarelle, Mongoliaan ja Solovetskin luostariin Vienanmerelle välillä pestautuen laivoihin, välillä nukkuen tähtien alla. The Independence of Finland Ismo Makkonen This year Finland celebrates its 94 th anniversary, since declaring independence on 6 December 1917. Before independence, Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of Russia reporting directly to the Tsar. Around 1890, two driving forces started to develop and each of them caused a particular event. The first driving force was the russification of Finland. The government of Russia wanted to remove the special status of Finland and make Russian its official language. The Finns, however, resisted and began dreaming of independence. The second factor was the awakening of the labour movement, whereby factory workers and tenant farmers wanted to improve their living and working conditions. This culminated in Civil War. The catalysts for these events was The Great War that was later renamed to World War I and the revolution in Russia. When Finland declared independence, Russia was the first to acknowledge it, followed by most European countries. England, however, only acknowledged it when the peace was signed in 1920 due to cooperation with Germans during the Finnish Civil War. The threat of war, on top of the russification, caused additional strains by requiring the building of fortifications and accepting Russian troops into coastal areas of Finland. When the Great War started, trade with other countries ceased and Finland was especially short of food. Because Finland had neither a large police force nor an army, and the Russian troops were in disarray due to revolution, unrest developed. Both labour and government backers created paramilitary organizations. Government backers were called the Whites and the labour was called the Reds. The Civil War started on 28 January 1918 and finished on 16 May 1918. The Reds took control of the southern cities, while the Whites organized their troops in Botnia and proceeded south to the battle of Tampere. The Germans landed in Hanko and later in Helsinki. The Reds were fleeing towards Russia. The last large battle was in Viipuri. The Whites won the war, and the leaders of the Reds escaped to Russia and founded the communist party of Finland in absence. In this war, 22,000 to 25,000 people lost their lives. About 12,000 Reds died in prison camps from hunger and sickness. Due to the harsh treatment of the Reds, animosity remained for generations after the war. Finland had to resist the pressures and threats of Russia. It belongs culturally to Western Europe. It is now part of European Union, using the Euro currency. Message from the Pastor Letters to Ourselves Some of you know that on New Year s Eve the Montreal Gazette published its front page with a heading something like: Letters to Ourselves. The article featured pictures of ten Montrealers at their present age, alongside photos of these same women and men at around the age of 16. I happen to know one of the people consulted, and it was interesting that beneath each photo the newspaper printed letters that the ten had been asked to write back to their teenaged selves. In the letters they were asked to give the kind of advice they d pass on if they could somehow reach back in time to their younger selves with a bit of wisdom. I don t know about you, but I thought the article was a wonderful idea. Not one of the letters was the same as another. Some were profound, some were more tongue-in-cheek, some were kind of funny, some almost sad. But a lot of them had similar advice: don t take life too seriously, said one letter. Be open to adventure, don t worry so much about what other people think of you, never, ever, believe anyone who tells you you re fat or that you can t sing, listen to your heart and so on. This year, perhaps more than most, none of us know what the future might bring. There are, as they say changes in the wind for St Michael s, and so, for the Montreal Finnish community. By the end of 2011, we may well be in a different church home or a temporary one. The old saying is that we may not know the future, but we know who holds the future in loving hands. And that is most certainly true. God has been very faithful to St. Michael s, and that faithfulness doesn t depend on where we are found. These times are definitely NOT times for fear, but rather, times for challenge. The Hebrews could not become the children of Israel without first leaving Egypt. The disciples could not become the apostles without first leaving the locked rooms of Jerusalem. And whatever we are called to BECOME, we must first step out from where we are now, in faith and in hope. This last fall I took a lot of photos of the people of St Michael s. And when anyone ANYONE sees them, they remark how the photos show a dynamic, interesting and interested group of people. This is part of the strength we ve been given. 2011 will be a year of challenges, change and, we pray, rewards. If, a year from now, we could, like the Montreal Gazette article, write a letter back to ourselves, what might we say? I imagine that we would say this: trust yourselves, and God even more. Be brave. Follow your hearts. And be open to the adventure you are being asked to set out on. That is our prayer for this coming year. Finnish Language School Lasten Suomi-koulun kevätlukukausi 2011 / Spring semester 2011 Montrealin Suomen Kielen Koulu on yksi kymmenistä ympäri maailmaa toimivista Suomi-kouluista. Suomi-kouluissa annetaan opetusta suomen kielessä suomea toisena kielenä tai äidinkielenään puhuville lapsille, joiden toinen tai molemmat vanhemmat ovat syntyperältään suomalaisia. Koulujen tarkoituksena on tukea lasten suomen kielen ja kulttuurin oppimista sekä hankitun kielitaidon säilyttämistä. Montrealin Suomi-koulu tarjoaa opetusta vauvamuskarista kouluikäisiin lapsiin. Ryhmäjako tehdään vuosittain lasten iän ja kielitaidon perusteella. Kokoonnumme lauantaiaamupäivisin noin kolmen viikon välein suomalaisella kirkolla. Kevätlukukausi alkaa lauantaina 15.1.2011. The Montreal Finnish Language School is one of dozens of Suomi-koulu that operate around the world. The mission of these schools is to help preserve and transmit Finnish cultural heritage and language skills to younger generations of Finns living abroad. Classes offered at the Montreal school range from a music playschool for babies to writing and reading exercises for school-aged children. She leaves behind her children Kim and Glenn in Ottawa, grandchildren Dennis in Germany and Christina in Vancouver, as well as her family in Finland. 9
