GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE FINNISH ICE HOCkEy ASSOCIATION 2013 marks the return of the IIHF Ice Hockey Women s World Championship tournament to the home of ice hockey Canada. The last time the country hosted the best players in the world was in 2010 when the Winter Olympics were held in Canada. The hosts were crowned the champions then and every time the Canada has hosted a World Championship or Olympic tournament. Steering the Finnish Lionesses ship in the tournament will be new head coach Mika Pieniniemi. Pieniniemi s predecessor Pekka Hämäläinen coached the team from 2009 to 2012 and earned bronze medals in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and in the 2011 World Championships in Switzerland. Pieniniemi has the team moving in the right direction and the Lionesses have looked sharp in their games this season. While the core of the Finnish team will remain mostly the same, players from the under-18 women s team are already making an impact on the adult stage. This year one of these players will be defender Anna Kilponen, who was a marquee player for Finland in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women s World Championship in Vierumäki and Heinola, Finland. The Finnish Lionesses four-year medal streak was broken last year when Switzerland grabbed their first ever medal by beating the Finns in the bronze medal game. Because of this, I am sure the Lionesses are hungry for a medal and will provide us with many exciting moments. I wish all teams the best of luck, and may the best team win! LIONESSES HUNGRy FOR THE PODIUM The 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Burlington, VT was one for the Swiss history books. Switzerland topped off its preliminary round group by upsetting Sweden in their final preliminary game by a score of 3 2. The Swiss then took full advantage of being matched up against Russia and advanced to the medal games after a decisive 5 2 win. Even though the Americans blocked their road to the final by shutting them out 10 0, the Swiss team had their sights firmly set on a medal. And eventually it was the perennial bronze medalist Finland who had to leave empty handed after being dealt a shocking 6 2 defeat. The hero of the Swiss team was goaltender Florence Schelling who backstopped her team to their first ever medal by only allowing two goals on a whopping 52 shots. For the Finns, the 4 th place finish capped off a rollercoaster of a tournament, full of dips and rises. In the preliminary round the Lionesses struggled against Russia (5 4 win), almost pulled off an upset against Canada (2 3 loss) and were handed a beating by the not-socourteous American hosts (0 11). In the quarterfinals the Finns were on cloud nine again after beating their arch rival Sweden 2 1, but were pulled promptly back down by the Swiss. was named as the best defender of the tournament. Other Finnish standouts were living Finnish ice hockey legend Karoliina Rantamäki, who scored five goals in the tournament, UND Fighting Sioux forward Michelle Karvinen and UMN Golden Gophers goalkeeper Noora Räty. Named once again the captain of the Lionesses, Hiirikoski will be one of the players to watch in the tournament. It will be up to her and her assistant captains as well as head coach Mika Pieniniemi to improve the teams consistency, hopefully returning the team onto the podium. IIHF WOMEN S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP The captain is usually the lynchpin of a team and Jenni Hiirikoski made no exception to that rule. The 26-year-old Lempäälä native lead her team by notching five assists in six games and jenni hiirikoski 5

The tournaments have been a positive experience, even though we haven t won one yet. What style of hockey is your team going to play? Hopefully a winning style! We are relying on an active, two-way team effort with creativity also playing an important part. You are heading towards your first World Championships, are you excited? Yes, but I believe that some butterflies in the stomach give you a good boost! What is essential to succeeding in the World Championships? A tight-knit team. Generating a good atmosphere in which everyone can be themselves is extremely important! the olympics in sochi being only a year away, how does the balance of power in women s hockey look like? She has played in the Finnish league for Ilves Tampere, JYP Jyväskylä, HPK Hämeenlinna and Blues Espoo before enrolling to the Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania, USA and returning to Jyväskylä. This season she has been stellar for JYP posting incredible numbers in the Finnish league. Her save percentage through 23 games is 96,53 and she has only given up 0,9 goals per game. Isabella is one of the most prominent Finnish goalie prospects in women s hockey. The 19-year-old has dominated on the U18 level earning best goaltender honors at the 2011 U18 WWs. She made her women s national team debut against Canada in November 2011 and played in one game in last year s tournament. This season she has been an extremely steady performer for Blues Espoo in the Finnish league. 14

The Tampere-born defender played on over a point-per-game pace in the Finnish league. As a four-time Olympian and six-time bronze medalist in the Olympics and World Championships, Emma Terho (née Laaksonen) is one of the most successful Finnish ice hockey players ever. She is also extremely respected amongst other players and the Emma Laaksonen trophy is given to the Fair Play player of the Finnish league. 16

She currently plays for JYP in the Finnish league and won bronze in the 2011 World Championships. Lindstedt s major national team debut came in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In last year s tournament she was a perfect shot with one goal on one shot. For the second season in a row, Anna Kilponen will be playing in both U18 and adult World Championships. In last year s adult World Championship she played in all six games with a -1 rating. In this year s U18 WW she was sixth in the defender scoring race with a goal and two assists. In the 2010 Olympics the 25-year-old defender was third in ice time on the Finnish team and played over 22 minutes a game. Last year Hiirikoski led Finnish defenders with five assists. Mira Jalosuo made her major national team debut in the 2007 World Championships in Canada and has since been a regular in the Finnish national team. Last year she played five games and earned one assists. She won the NCAA championship in 2012 with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. 18

Saija Tarkki (née Sirviö) is with three world championship bronzes (2004, 2008 and 2009), one Olympic bronze (2010) and over 170 national team games one of the most experienced members of the team. Tampere native Venla Hovi is coming into her fifth World Championship campaign. She made her major international debut in 2007 and scored two goals with a team-best shooting percentage (33 %) in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This season Rajahuhta has been playing on over a pointper-game pace for Finnish league powerhouse Blues Espoo. In last year s tournament Rajahuhta scored one goal in six games. Susanna made her adult World Championship debut in 2011 after her last U18 tournament, in which she scored six points (4g, 2a) in six games. Playing all her U18 career at an over a goalper-game pace, Välimäki was second in the Finnish league scoring race with 65 points in 27 games. Her first adult major tournament was the 2010 Olympic games, where she netted two assists in five games. After spending two years in the Warner Hockey School in Alberta, Canada, Niina Mäkinen returned to Finland and helped Kärpät Oulu win their first league title in 2012. Her last major tournament was the 2011 World Championships, from which she came home with a bronze medal. She played all six games in the tournament. 22

Karvinen netted five assists in six games, placing third behind Karoliina Rantamäki and Jenni Hiirikoski in the Finnish scoring race. The 2012 WCHA rookie of the year is currently in her junior season in college. Despite playing over 30 games in junior and adult national teams, Sari Kärnä has still yet to make her major national team debut.
