Kurssilla tutustutaan myös havaintoaineiston hankintaan liittyen erilaisiin tutkimusasetelmiin, tilastollisen koesuunnittelun periaatteisiin ja otantatutkimuksen perusmenetelmiin. Lisäksi kurssilla käsitellään todennäköisyyslaskennan perusteita ja todennäköisyysjakaumia sek tilastollisen testauksen peruteita. 2

For complete information on Teaching language: English When studying a specific intermediate course/topic in statistics, such as regression analysis, linear mixed models, generalized linear models, spatial statistics, sampling, multivariate analysis, or Bayesian inference, student encounters some amount of theoretical knowledge that should have been mastered before. Courses statistical inference 1 and 2 are main theoretical courses of the statistics discipline, giving these basics in an easy way, but so that further studies are faciliated. Instead of focusing of proofs and mathematical details of the theory, we try to focus on understanding of them (e.g. through simulation) and emphasizing the meaning of the results in practice. The course is highly recommended for all students who are going to study statistics beyond the introductory level. Together with the first part (Introduction to statistical inference 1) it is a mandatory course for intermediate studies in statistics (tilastotieteen aineopinnot). The first part was lectured in spring 2017 and will be lectured again in spring 2018. The course starts with the basics of estimation theory: estimator and its properties and introduce methods to estimate the expected value, variance and covariance as well as the complete distribution of a random variable using observed data. We will cover the methods of least squares, moments, maximum likelihood and also discuss the Bayesian estimation methods. Then we move to the theory of statistical hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. In this context, we cover some distributions that practitioner will often face: the normal distribution, t-distribution, χ 2 -distribution, F -distribution and the links between those. We will also cover some fundamental theoretical results: the law of large numbers and central limit theorem (CLT) and discuss the practical implication of them. The recommended background knowledge includes the basics of probability calculus, matrix calculus and R-language (or some other corresponding tool such as MATLAB). This means that the student should have completed courses introduction to statistical inference 1 (or alternatively Probability and statistics and some course on matrix algebra) and R-course (see http://moodle.uef.fi/course/view.php?id=3749).
