X / 26 HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS Market Report / 26 Foreign visitors nights increase number of Finnish overnight stays unchanged Foreign business visitors had a significant influence on the overall number of nights spent at Helsinki accommodation establishments in 26. In, the number of nights spent by foreign visitors increased by 11.6%. Some of the growth in business travel is explained by the Finnish EU Presidency and the numerous associated international conferences. On the other hand, Finnish economic growth (GNP +5.9% in 26) has increased the number of international contacts and this is reflected in business travel figures. Despite a slight decrease in domestic stay-overs in, the - numbers were still up by 2.6%. Average length of stay unchanged Growth in the amount of business travel usually leads to a reduction in the length of the average stay. In the previous years, growth in leisure travel led to an increase in the duration of foreign stays, an important factor for the travel industry. At present, the average length of stay is 2.2 days, down from 2.8 days in. Foreign visitors average length of stay has also been reduced by growth in visitor numbers from Russia, as Russians only stay for 1.77 days on average. Russian market recovers In Helsinki, as in the rest of Finland, the number of travellers from Russia has grown strongly. In, the number of stay-overs by Russian visitors to Helsinki increased by a stunning 42.3%. Growth in the Russian economy has put money in the pockets of consumers. At the same time, the travel opportunities available to the middle class have improved further. In -, the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau realised an extensive advertising campaign in the St Petersburg metro in cooperation with the Finnish Tourist Board and local travel agents. The aim has been to develop the New Year and Russian Christmas season, which is the most important season in the Russian market.
