COURSE PROGRAMME COURSE NAME: 21631051 Structural Engineering 1 GROUP: CREDITS: BECONU06A3 6 cr TEACHER: TIME: 01.09.2007-31.4.2008 OBJECTIVE: This course provides an understanding of the practice of structural engineering. It builds upon the fundamental skills developoed in Mechanics and Building Construction and presents the principles of structures and their elements. The course provides a perspective for dealing with the issues of strength, stiffness and stability. The study of the interrelationship between analysis and design of structural systems, timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete and masonry systems are discussed. It also introduces students to the use of building codes for design criteria. RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: STUDY METHODS: Mechanics, Building Construction and Civil Engineering and Computer Fundamentals. Hands-on design experience and skills will be gained and learned through problem sets and a comprehensive design project. An understanding of real world open- ended design issues will be developed. The student is a member of A learning group and attends the contact sessions, seminars and excursions. The course equals 160 student- hours, 64 lesson-hours + 32 practice- hours + 64 independent work hours. 1

COURSE TIMETABLE: INTRODUCTION Wellcome to study Structural Engineering I. 1 TIMBER STRUCTURES We start with Timber Structures and the objective is to introduce the basics of timber structures. The student takes part in the structural design of timber frame residential small houses, which are also studied in other courses like Building Construction and BIM Building Information Modell. Later on other structural systems as timber portal frames and multi-storey houses are presented. Much of the source material and readings are in the address: http://www.woodfocus.fi and in the publications: EC5 Esimerkkilaskelmat and Kähkönen: Kantavat Puurakenteet, Insinööriopetus The study books present in more detail the themes, contents, study material and source material. They are abreviations of the course's web- presentation, which are in the address: http://www.amk.fi/tekniikka user: amk@amk.fi id: jasenamk12. The still under construction material presents themes like timber frame residential houses, multi-storey residential houses and portal frames made of timber, steel and concrete. 2 h lessons+ 1 h practices+ 2 h independent work= 5 hours/week INTRODUCTION http://www.woodfocus.fi Timber Construction Courseware of Technique TIMBER STRUCTURES 2 Timber Products abreviation, more http://www.woodfocus.fi 3 TimberDesignCriteria, Timber Element Design, EC5 4 EC1 Loads, Timber Element Design 5 B1 Varmuus ja kuormitukset Loads, Timber Element Design, 6 B10 Puurakenteet Timber Structures Element Design 7 Timber Element Design, EC5+ B10 8 Timber Framing and Bracing Single House Framing 3
