Modelling tree and stand characteristics and estimating biomass removals and harvesting costs of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) plantations in Iceland Research plan for masters thesis in forest sciences The PELLETime 2009 Symposium Mervi Juntunen
Presentation: What happened in Iceland 2008 The data we collected What I will do about it Plantation in Norðtunga
The field work in Iceland What we wanted: variation of ages over 15 years variation of densities size more than 0.3 ha stands which are thinned or harvested and stands which are not Totally 86 stands and 195 plots. Pre-existing data helped us a lot when we were choosing stands. Pinus contorta in Selskógur

The field work measurements on a regular plot Circular plots with fixed radius 5.64 m, 1-4 plots per stand Over bark diameter at breast height (1.3 m) from every tree in a plot Height of the diameter median tree, heights of five thickest trees and heights of five smallest diameter trees A tree nearest to the center of the plot was drilled at breast height
The field work measurements on a sample plot The first plot of every third stand was a sample plot: all previous measurements trees were classified in 1 cm diameter classes the height of one tree in every class was measured Three stem analysis trees were felled: the diameter median tree, one of the five thickest and one of five smallest diameter tree Stem analysis trees were also drilled. The over bark diameters were measured on relative heights.
Aims of the research Aim 1: Tree level characteristics to be modelled: stem volume height-diameter relationship diameter increment Plot level characteristics to be modelled: dominant height-age relationship diameter distribution natural selfthinning
Aims of the research Aim 2: These models and existing biomass model are applied to the inventory calculations based on field measured data from lodgepole plantations in Southern Iceland. Biomass yields and volumes will be predicted for over the 10 years period by using simulation.
Aims of the research Aim 3: To calculate unit costs of wood fuel harvesting in present situation and analyze cost development in the future. Pinus contorta in Hallormstað

Sekamallit: Menetelmät regressiomalli, jossa kiinteät parametrit ja satunnaiset parametrit aineiston hierarkkinen rakenne kiinteiden parametrien estimoinnissa yleistetyn pienimmän neliösumman menetelmä (GLS) satunnaisten parametrien estimoinnissa paras lineaarinen harhaton ennustin (BLUP) mallien parametrien estimointi tehdään R-ohjelman avulla
Menetelmät Biomassan ja hakkuukertymän laskenta lasketaan nykytilanteen mukaiset biomassat ja hakkuukertymät (tilavuus ja runkojen keskimääräinen koko) Etelä-Islannin aineistolla hyödyntäen laadittuja malleja simuloidaan metsiköiden kasvu viiden vuoden päähän ja lasketaan samat tunnukset toistetaan simulointi kymmenen vuoden päähän lähtötilanteesta
Korjuukustannukset Menetelmät edellä tuotettiin tiedot hakkuukertymästä ja keskimääräisestä rungonkoosta nykyhetkelle sekä kahdelle seuraavalle viisivuotiskaudelle hyödynnetään aiempia tutkimuksia energiapuun korjuusta ja lasketaan korjuukustannukset perinteiselle maataloustraktorille, johon on lisätty puunkorjuun kalusto
