Market Report / July 2015 Strong growth in overnight stays Overnight stays by visitors to Helsinki were up clearly, some 18% year-on-year, in July. The number of stays, 437,800, was the highest ever recorded in July. The primary reason behind this growth was the Gymnaestrada event. Overnight stays by domestic visitors increased by more than ten percent, while stays by overseas guests were up no less than a quarter from July 2014. The largest shares were attributable to visitors from Germany, Switzerland, Japan, USA, UK and Russia. Overnight stays by guests from our eastern neighbour decreased by a third, but this was offset by a 50% increase in stays by German visitors and an increase of 145% by guests from Switzerland. Nationwide, overnight stays were up 0.7% in July. The domestic segment contracted 1.1%, but the international segment grew 6.5%. Stays by Russian visitors were down 37%. The room occupancy rate of Helsinki's accommodation providers was 77.7% in July, i.e. clearly better than one year ago. The July room occupancy rate has never been this high in Helsinki. The average price of a night, 45.65, was about half a euro higher than last year. Overnight stays for recreational and business travel purposes were both up clearly in July, with the recreational travel side contributing more to growth. The average duration of stay by foreign visitors to Helsinki lengthened clearly in July when compared to one year ago, while domestic guests stays for the same amount of time as earlier. The volume of passengers at Helsinki-Vantaa airport grew 1.7% in January-August. International traffic was up 1.8% and domestic travel 0.8%. The volume of passengers passing through Helsinki's ports increased 1.6% in January-July. Estonian and Swedish traffic were up a little over one percent and Russian traffic more than 7%, while German traffic contracted.
