2 The famous hockey rivals Finland and Sweden have joined forces outside the rink. These two Northern Stars of ice hockey prepare to make hockey history by co-hosting the Worlds two years in a row. In 2012, the main venue and the arena for the semi-finals, bronze medal game, and the final of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. 5 GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE FINNISH ICE HOCKEy ASSOCIATION The IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship tournament has always offered a great look into the very best NHL draft-eligible players before they hit the limelight. In last year s tournament we had the privilege to see the likes of Mika Zibanejad, Mark Scheifele, Ryan Murphy, JT Miller, Joel Armia and Nail Yakupov who were all first round choices in this year s NHL draft. The Finnish team will be bursting with young talent, many of which have already gotten a taste of the next step playing in the 2012 World Junior Championships in Canada. Players like Ville Pokka, Rasmus Ristolainen, Aleksander Barkov and Olli Määttä will be counted on to provide leadership despite of their young age. 17-year-old Jokerit Helsinki prospect Teuvo Teräväinen, another standout of this year s Finnish team, scored 6 goals and eight points in 4 games leading the scoring race in the 5 nation tournament in Pori in February. Finland was bumped out of the medal games last year by future bronze medalist Russia, but this year the highly-skilled Finnish team, lead by head coach Jussi Tapola, has their sights set on the gold medals. 7 FINNS CHALLENGE USA S DOMINANCE OF THE U18 WC S The Americans, who lead the all-time medal table of the U18 World Championships tournament, have strung together three consecutive titles in the U18 WC s. In 2009 they dropped the Russians 5 0 with Jack Campbell, Dallas Stars 1 st round pick of the 2010 NHL draft, earning a shut-out marked the first of two consecutive USA - Sweden finals. The first time around the Swedes were trounced 3 1 and Jack Campbell, last year s shut-out hero, earned his second gold medal in two years. Last year s final was a tight game between the two teams and the gold medals were settled in overtime. The Americans were more aggressive in the game shooting more than the Swedes, and this paid off in overtime where Connor Murphy, who netted a total of two goals and one assist in the game, started the third gold medal festivities in third years for the US team. A Finnish player won the tournament scoring race two times in a row in recent years. In 2009 it was Edmonton Oilers prospect Toni Rajala, who broke Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin s previous U18 WC point record with 19 points in six games, and in 2010 Jokerit Helsinki forward Teemu Pulkkinen beat Swede Johan Larsson by one point with 15 points total. After a gap year Jokerit Helsinki forward Teuvo Teräväinen looked to be a strong contender for the scoring race after he was the leading scorer in the five nations tournament held in Pori in February 2012 with six goals and eight points in four games. However, Teräväinen s stellar play with Jokerit will likely keep him in the Finnish SM-liiga playoffs during this year s tournament. Even without Teräväinen Finland will have a good team with standouts such as defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen of TPS Turku and Tappara Tampere forward Aleksander Barkov. Both Barkov and Ristolainen played in this year s WJC s in Calgary and Edmonton. Barkov scored a goal and added three assists and Ristolainen netted three assists in the tournament. Last year the Finns fell in the quarterfinal stage to the Russians but this year the Lions have their sights set on the medal games. IIHF WORLD JUNIOR U18 CHAMPIONSHIP aleksander sasha barkov became the youngest goal-scorer in the Finnish sm-liiga. He scored against ässät Pori on the 4th of october when he was only 16 years, 1 month and 2 days old. 7

He has good hockey sense and he reads plays well. He has proven to be a winning goalie at international level during this season. He ranked fifth in Central Scouting s goalie ranking in January. Parikka is a skilled and puck moving defenceman. He has good vision and he can help the team offensively. He doesn t hesitate with the puck and he plays with confidence. Parikka started the season with HPK in Finnish junior league, but moved to KalPa in the fall. He hasn t played with Finnish U18 national team this year. Lindell was close to break the record of most points by a defenceman in one season in Finnish junior league. He tallied 51 points in 48 games during regular season for Jokerit. He was named the defenceman of the year and also a member of the All Star team. He has size and good hockey sense. He has a good shot and he will help the power play. He is calm, sees the ice well and moves the puck. He has good hockey sense in both ends of the ice. Vainio is able to kill penalties and help the team on power play.
