2 GrEETInGs SUOMALAISTA KIEKKOA KULJETTAA FINNAIR GrEETInGs FroM THE president of THE FInnIsH ICE HoCKEY AssoCIATIon The Olympic year is always special. Played once every four years, the Olympic tournament is currently the premiere ice hockey tournament in the world and always provides for many entertaining games. The season is, however, extremely taxing to coaches and especially players. This is why the willingness of Finnish players to don the Lion shirt again in the World Championship has been a pleasant surprise. They have shown the enormous size of their Lion hearts, for which I applaud every one of them. The 2014 Ice Hockey World Championships will be held in Minsk, Belarus this year and many teams will be contending for the title. Finland, Sweden and Russia will be strengthened with many NHL players and the United States as well as Canada will be dangerous, as usual. Also, as evident for example with the 2012 World Championships, you should never count out the Czech Republic or Slovakia, nor the 2013 comet Switzerland. The competition level of ice hockey as a whole has spread to such a degree that there are no easy games in the World Championship these days. Finnish ice hockey has already seen a lot of success this season with the U20 World Championship and the men s Olympic bronze and now the men s team has the chance to make this already amazing season truly unforgettable. 3 One for the ages Main host Sweden managed to break the home-ice curse and won the World Championship in front of a sell-out crowd at Globen last year. The real sensation of the tournament was, however, at the receiving end of Sweden s five-goal performance in the final. Pesky Switzerland beat all odds and played an absolutely fantastic tournament beating favorites Sweden, Canada and USA en route to the gold medal game. Even more convincing than the wins was the way the Swiss played; the feisty team coached by Sean Simpson employed an active style of play that surprised everyone. One of the players truly relishing the play style was young forward Nino Niederreiter, who emerged as one of the leaders of the team leading the Swiss with five goals in 8 games. Hindered by injuries to key players before the tournament, Finland entered the 2013 tournament as a huge underdog. After a tough start against Germany, the Lions improved game after game surprising skeptics. Perhaps the most memorable game of the tournament for Finns was the marquee match-up between Finland and Russia. Powered by the red-hot first line of Juhamatti Aaltonen, Petri Kontiola and Janne Pesonen, Finland trumped the star-studded Russian roster by a score of 3-2. Scoring two goals in that game was Kontiola, who emerged as the undisputed Lion King and put on a dominating performance rarely seen in the World Championships. Kontiola, who was awarded best forward honors of the 2013 tournament, will be on the limelight THE CHIEF After a four-year hiatus after the Vancouver Olympics, Olli Jokinen will represent Finland for the second time in one season. again this year in Minsk, Belarus. The Traktor Chelyabinsk star forward will not be sharing the load alone, however, as Olli Jokinen will be joining the Lions in Minsk. The 15-year NHL veteran will be counted on to produce points as well as provide leadership. As usual, Finland will have a star-studded goaltending trio to lean on with NHL star Pekka Rinne leading the pack. Backing up Rinne will be KHL standout Mikko Koskinen and young goalkeeper phenom Juuse Saros, who backstopped Finland to the U20 World Championship title this season. After a sensational U20 World Championship and a memorable Olympic bronze, the Lions have all the pieces in place to make this hockey season one for the ages for Finnish hockey fans IIHF World Championship 5

He uses his size well and covers a huge portion of the net even when he drops down to his knees. Mäntylä, who has played all his SM-liiga games with Tappara, came close to his second championship in 2013, but Ässät Pori claimed the cup after game six of the finals. Mäntylä is a very skilled skater and brings a big physical element to the table despite his modest size. Marttinen is an extremely physical defensive defenseman who does not back down to anyone. Marttinen always leaves everything on the ice and his extremely intensive play style is lauded by his teammates. Although not a run-and-gun type of player, Marttinen will occasionally pinch in and join the attack.
