I / 25 HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS Market Report for January UK and German markets spinning to new record high January was quite good when thinking about foreign overnights in Helsinki. Russians were the biggest foreign tourist group because of their holiday season. The Russian market has been declining during the past years but at least this season Helsinki got a very good start from there. Russian overnights totalled 18,2, which was 3.4% more than in previous year. Also Great Britain was doing very well. 1,6 British overnights were registered in January showing an increase of 12.7%. German market has been very prosperous now for almost two years already. Low cost flights and quite aggressive campaigns in Germany have been creating positive flow of Germans to Helsinki. January figures rose by 6.5%, which means 7,6 more overnights. Japanese and French tourists were found more than last year in January. Japanese overnights increased by almost 16 % and French over 24%. Drop in North American overnights One year ago Helsinki and Hämeenlinna hosted Icehockey IIHF World Championships of men under 2 years old. This is the reason why especially Canadian and US market were down dramatically in January. US overnights decreased by 23% and Canadian by over 66%! Large sports events and international congresses may affect this way and it is good to remember when wondering next year s possible declines. China Chinese market is very interesting. Since the new ADS status started for Chinese visitors in Europe last September, Helsinki has had some struggles. In January the decline continued over 6% down compared to previous year! Especially northwestern market (including Beijing) and western market area (including Shanghai) have been difficult for Helsinki. Some rumours describe the situation difficult only because both Finnish and Chinese authorities have been tightening the regulations of travelling abroad. Both for different reasons though. Helsinki gets around 1% from all flight passengers travelling from China to Helsinki. All the others are so called transit passengers. Stop-overs are our new strategy for the Chinese market. 35 Monthly overnights in Helsinki Overnights down in Helsinki in January Total - 2.6% Domestic - 3.7% Foreign countries - 1.6% Up: Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Japan, France, Estonia Down: Sweden, USA, Norway, The Netherlands, China, Spain. Increase in business travel in January: Leisure nights: - 1.7 Business nights: + 7.1 Other reason: - 8. Occupancy rate up in January: 56,4 % (55,9 % in January 24 and 54,6 % in January 23). Price per night up in January: 73,92 EUR (67,79 EUR in 24 and 74,77 EUR in January 23). Rise in international air traffic in January-March: The number of passengers at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport: international traffic + 7.6%, domestic traffic - 1.7%.
