2016 illinois track & field 2016 qualifying standards Indoor - ncaa championships Qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships is based on descending-order list for the season and adhering to the qualifying regulations/criteria published on NCAA. org. For each individual event contested, the top 16 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition. The stated maximums are absolute and will not be extended as a result of ties. Outdoor - preliminary round of championship The NCAA Division I Men s and Women s Track and Field Committee has decided to trim the NCAA preliminary format from four regional championships to a pair of preliminary qualifying sites, eliminating the Mideast and Midwest regionals, and extend the meet from two to three days. Illinois has been placed in the West Region and will head to Lawrence, Kansas from May 26-28 for the meet. The East Preliminary Round of Championship will be hosted by North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. Qualification to the Preliminary Round competition of the Championship is based on the descending order list for the season, segregated by east and west sites, and prepared solely from the mandatory submission of meet results during the season and adhering to the Qualifying Regulations published in the Championship Handbook. For each individual event contested at each of the Championship Preliminary Round competitions, the top 48 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested at each of the Championship Preliminary Round competitions, the top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition. Qualifying to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships is accomplished through performance in the Preliminary Round competition at each site for events contested at those competitions. Twelve competitors from each individual event and a minimum of eight teams from each relay event advance from each Preliminary Round site to the Final Championship Meet. Qualification, through competition in an event at a Preliminary Round competition, is required to participate in that event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Any individual or relay team must remain eligible for advancement throughout all rounds of the Championships. Qualification for the Heptathlon and Decathlon events of the Championship is accomplished through a student-athlete s position on the national descending order list. Based upon declarations, made before the Preliminary Round competition, twenty-four student-athletes will be accepted to the final championship meet in each event. The 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. 3 // 2016 llinois men s Track & Field
2016 illinois track & field track & field facilities Illinois Track and Soccer stadium The original Illinois Track and Soccer Stadium was built in 1987 at a cost of $2.2 million. The first meet at the stadium was the Illinois Invitational on April 18, 1987. The stadium has played host to a number of meets, including the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2008, 1997 and 1990. Major renovations began on the Illinois Track and Field Stadium in October of 1998, with phase one of the project already being completed. At a cost of $1.2 million, JJR Architects of Chicago installed lighting for the entire stadium, built a separate throwing area for field events and adapted the grass field inside the track to facilitate soccer. A new scoreboard is the newest feature at the stadium and phase two of the renovation calls for the addition of 8,000 permanent seats, locker rooms, a press box, rest rooms and concessions. The outdoor track is just steps away from the Bielfeldt Athletic Administration Building, where the track and field coaching offices are located. armory track Competition during the indoor season takes place at the Armory Track, adjacent to Huff Hall. The Armory, built in 1914, was originally designed to house the University ROTC programs. The center of the roof is over 100 feet off the floor and encapsulates over 62,000 square feet of open space. Though the ROTC programs are still part of Armory Building, the Armory has become better known for its indoor track & field facility. The current track is six lanes around with 11 lanes on the straightaway. The track & field facility underwent a $1.2 million renovation after the 2003 season. On the track, the project included a new 13mm thick, Beynon Encapsulated Polyurethane 200m running surface and seating for over 1400 spectators. In the field, the project included two opposing long/triple jump and pole vault runways, and a shot/weight area that features a cement circle recessed into the floor. 4 // 2016 llinois men s Track & Field
The Coaching Staff MIKE TURK head coach 5th Season (10th overall) Mike Turk is in his 10th season overall at the University of Illinois coaching the jumps, throws and multievents. He is well known as one of the top field event coaches in the country and is especially heralded for his development of athletes in the throwing events. Turk has accumulated over 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, including 18 years at the NCAA Division I level. In his career, Turk has coached All-Americans in nine different events, including the long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, weight throw, hammer throw, discus, decathlon and 800m. In 2015, Turk led the Orange and Blue to a historic season, culminating with the first top-10 finish at NCAA Championships since 1988 and a Big Ten Coach of the Year award. The indoor season saw the Illini place second at Big Ten Championships with titles from DJ Zahn (200m and 400m) and the 4x400m relay team. DJ Zahn also broke the school s 200m and 400m school records at the Big Ten Championships meet. Ian Barnett added in his own historic success by breaking Illinois 3,000m record with a 8:02.40 mark at the Rod McCravy meet. In the field, Davis Fraker destroyed his own school record with a 22.50m heave in the weight throw to take third-place at Big Ten Championships. Outdoors, more records fell as Zahn reset the 200m record and Fraker broke the hammer throw record with a mark of 68.41m. Turk and the Fighting Illini brought home a Big Ten Championship from East Lansing, Mich. with event victories from Brandon Stryganek (100m), Zahn (400m), Cam Viney (400m hurdles), 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams, as well as numerous other podium finishes to help the Illini win the meet by 37 points. The 2015 campiagn concluded with a T-10th place finish at the NCAA Championship meet. Zahn (400m) and David Kendziera (400m hurdles) both made the podium with third place finishes, while both relay teams accompanied Lafond with point-scoring finishes. In 2014, Turk led the Illini to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, the program s highest finish since 1994, and crowned three conference champions (Vanier Joseph - 110m hurdles, Stephon Pamilton - 400m, Joe McAsey - 800m). The Orange and Blue also captured a share of the HyVee Cup at the prestigious Drake Relays for the second straight year, tying with then-ranked No. 4 Arkansas. After the impressive showing, the Illini earned a No. 14 ranking in the USTFCCCA week four national poll, the highest mid-season ranking in program history. Illinois boasted six NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifiers and earned six second-team All-America honors, as McAsey (800m), Brandon Stryganek (200m) and the 4x400m relay (DJ Zahn, McAsey, Kenneth Allen, Pamilton) placed in the top-16 in the nation. After the successful outdoor season, Turk was named Men s Coach of the Year for the Midwest region by the USTFCCCA. Indoors, the Illini finished fourth at the conference championships, with Pamilton winning the 400m for the second straight year. Two athletes represented Illinois at the NCAA Indoor Championships as Vanier Joseph (60m hurdles) and Davis Fraker (weight throw) earned second-team All-America honors. During the 2013 season, the Fighting Illini finished runner-up at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The second place finish was the highest since the 2000 season, as Brandon Stryganek (60m) and Stephon Pamilton (400m) won titles in their respective events. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, the school record holding distance medley relay squad earned All-America honors, while the 4x400m relay just missed the distinction. Outdoors, Turk led the squad to winning the first annual HyVee Cup at the Drake Relays. The success continued into the championship season, as the squad finished fourth at the Big Ten meet, as they crowned two individual conference champions (Vanier Joseph - 110m H & Stephon Pamilton - 400m). At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the 4x400m relay squad captured first team All-America honors after they finished fifth. The 4x100m relay squad earned second team All-America honors after finishing 13th overall, while individually, freshman Juan Paul Green earned the same distinction after he placed 14th in the 400m. Overall, three Illini set school records indoors and 17 notched marks in the school s top-10 outdoors. In the 2012 season, Turk led the squad to the program s highest finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 1988. The Orange and Blue finished T-11th with 20 points, marking the best finish since the 88 season where they placed seventh. The Illini earned four All-America honors and senior Andrew Riley won NCAA titles in the 100m and 110m hurdles. Riley became the first male athlete in the NCAA to win those two events in the same year. He was named USTFCCCA National Track Athlete of the Year and won Illinois Dike Eddleman Award. Indoors, the team finished T-13th which was also the highest finish by an Illinois squad since 1995 where they tied for fourth in the nation. Overall, the squad boasted three Big Ten Champions outdoors, with Riley winning the 100m/110m hurdles and the 4x100m relay while Riley also took the 60m and 60m hurdles conference crown indoors. The squad set 14 top-10 indoor times in Illinois record books and 10 times in the outdoor record books. one second-team award for their performances at nationals, including a third-place finish by the 4x100m relay, a runner-up showing by Andrew Riley in the 110m hurdles, a sixth-place finish by Stanley Azie in the 100m and an eighth-place effort in the 400m hurdles by Cody Wisslead. The Orange and Blue also boasted three Big Ten Champions, with Riley in the 110m hurdles, Wisslead in the 400m hurdles and the 4x100m relay. During the 2011 indoor season, the Illini tied for 22nd at nationals, the highest indoor finish by an Illinois squad since 1998 (17th). Riley won his second career national title, as he raced to victory in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Freshman Davis Fraker, who broke the school record in his first collegiate throw, was the first Illini ever to qualify for nationals in the weight throw and earned second-team All-American honors. Riley also competed a threepeat in the event by winning the 60m-hurdle title at the Big Ten Indoor Championships while Matt Bane captured the Big Ten title in the pole vault. In his first year as interim head coach in 2010, Turk worked to change the culture of the program and made great strides from the indoor to the outdoor season, which was capped off by a national title in the 110m hurdles by Andrew Riley. Turk s squad qualified 16 athletes to the West Preliminary Round of Championship and advanced in three events to the NCAA Championships, with Riley in the 110m hurdles, junior Cody Wisslead in the 400m hurdles and the 4x100m relay. At the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, the Illini turned in their best conference finish since 2006, as they placed sixth overall. Turk also coached junior Matt McHugh into the record books again, as the Exter, N.H., native recorded school records during the indoor and outdoor seasons. McHugh smashed the school record in the weight throw with a mark of 63-2 3/4 (19.27m) and broke his own school record in the hammer throw twice, tallying a personal-best mark of 202-10 (61.83m). During the 2009 season, Turk coached a pair of athletes who altered Illinois records that had stood for 30 years. Junior Greg Shroka placed sixth in the high jump with a personal-best height of 7 feet, 1 1/2 inches (2.17m) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to become the first Fighting Illini outdoor All-American in the event since Gail Olson took fifth in 1979. McHugh broke Bob Carper s school record of 187-4 set three decades ago when he marked 190-4 (58.02m) in the hammer throw at the Illinois Invitational. Along with those record-setting marks, Turk also guided junior Casey Fonnesbeck to a sixth-place finish in the shot put at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, where he also qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regionals with a personal-best distance of 57-3 ¾. Fighting Illini field event athletes also achieved a number of milestones in 2008 under Turk, as Shroka became just the third athlete in Illinois history to leap over seven feet in the high jump, marking 7-0 1/4 at the Illinois Twilight. Shroka went on to earn All-Mideast Region honors, narrowly missing a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and scoring at both the Big Ten indoor and outdoor meets. In the throwing events, Fonnesbeck earned a trip to regionals and scored at the Big Ten outdoor meet in the shot put with a mark of 57-1 that ranks 10th in Illinois history. McHugh had a standout debut season, marking 59-7 in the weight throw and 183-7 in the hammer throw to rank third and fourth in Illinois history, respectively. In addition, multievent athlete Andrew Zollner moved up to second on the Illini all-time list in the decathlon, with a personal-best point total of 6,776 points at the Big Ten Championships. In 2007 under Turk, Nick Brown continued his success at the conference championships by finishing second in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and third in both events at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Brown also competed in the long and triple jumps at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. Turk helped guide Shroka to a successful rookie campaign, as he scored as a redshirt freshman at the Big Ten Championships and qualified for the regional championships. Zollner also came on strong, taking sixth in the decathlon and ninth in the heptathlon at the confrence meets. In addition, Chad Gridley improved his personal-best in the discus by over 20 feet. Turk made an immediate impact with the Fighting Illini in his first year with the program in 2006. His athletes crashed the record books, with nine all-time top-10 performances in Illini history, with the season highlighted by the outstanding achievements of Brown. Under Turk s leadership, Brown was an NCAA Championships qualifier in both the long and triple jumps during the indoor season and in the triple jump during the outdoor season, earning All-America honors in the long jump indoor and the triple jump outdoor. Turk is a USATF Level II certified coach in the jumps and throws and as an instructor. He is a part of the USATF Coaches Education Level II staff and helped co-author the USATF Level II Throws curriculum. Turk is a popular clinician and has spoken at numerous clinics throughout the country. He is also a lead instructor at the prestigious Ironwood Throws Development Camp, organized the King of the Ring Throws Clinic and has authored several articles. As a student-athlete at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., Turk received his bachelor s degree in Physical Education in 1985 and competed on the varsity track and field team. He was the 1984 CCIW Conference Champion in the shot put. Turk and his wife, Lori, reside in Mahomet and have three children, daughters Hannah and Payton and a son, Sam. Turk led the Illini to the program s best finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 23 years during the 2011 season. The Illini tied for 12th overall, marking the highest finish by an Illini squad since placing seventh in 1988. The Coaching Staff jake stewart Assistant Coach, Distance fourth Season adrian wheatley Assistant Coach, sprints/hurdles fifth Season In 2014-15, Stewart led the men s cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, with Jannis Toepfer placing sixth to earn All-Big Ten honors. The team earned a fifth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional with their top performance coming from Ian Barnett with a mark of 30:20.3. During the 2014 indoor track season, Ian Barnett set the school record for the 3,000m run, with a time of 8:02.40, at the Rod McCravy meet. Outdoors, the distance crew netted 30 points at the Big Ten Championships, led by runner-up performances by Joe McAsey (800m) and Dylan Lafond (3,000m steeplechase). Jake Stewart finished his second year as the head men s cross country coach/assistant track coach and saw a very successful year, including five new school records and 12 additions to the All-Time Top 10 lists. Stewart coached two All-Americans, two All-Midwest Regional athletes, three All-Big Ten athletes, and 10 NCAA qualifiers. Stewart guided the Illini cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Big Ten Championships, which was the best performance in 16 years. For the second consecutive year, the squad sent two runners to the NCAA Championships as senior s Hunter Mickow and Jannis Topfer ran in the national meet for the first time in their career. During his time at Purdue, he had success on the cross country course and on the track. In the fall, he led the men s cross country team to its best finish since the 2008 season. Stewart also had two athletes qualify for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round of Championship (800, 5,000m) while also coaching an athlete who s performance placed them into the top five all-time in the school record books. In addition, Stewart had a USATF Junior All-American and recruited the first Foot Locker All-American recruit in school history. Before coaching at Purdue, Stewart spent three years at Lamar University where he was the assistant track coach and cross country coach. At Lamar, he was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 and in 2010 after the men won four of their five invitationals including a top finish at the 12-team conference championships. The men were also back-to-back cross country conference champions in 2009 and 2010. Individually, he coached 3 All-Americans in indoor and outdoor track, 17 Southland Conference champions, 39 All-Conference performers, 10 NCAA qualifiers, and one World Cross Country Championship athlete. Stewart helped the Cardinals set 10 new school records and coached 53 conference point scorers in both indoor and outdoor track. Prior to his tenure at Lamar, Stewart was the assistant coach for the Iona College men s and women s cross country and track and field teams for three seasons. In his time with the Gaels, the men s cross country team finished third in 2006 and runnerup in 2007 and 2008, the highest finish of any program in school history. The men s team was also honored for its scholastic achievements as it was named the NCAA Division I All-Academic Team of the Year in 2006 and 2007. In addition, he coached the first women s cross country team to qualify for the 2006 national championships. During his time as an undergrad at Iona, Stewart helped the Gaels win four MAAC championships and finish in the top 10 each year. In addition, he was the captain of the squad in 2005, becoming the first walk-on in program history to achieve the feat. Stewart earned his Masters degree in Sports Administration from Concordia University, Irvine California and his Bachelor of Science in English from Iona College in 2005. He resides in Champaign and he and his wife, Brandi, welcomed their first child in November. Adrian Wheatley is in his fifth year at Illinois, coaching primarily the sprints and hurdles. Wheatley was named the USTFCCCA Men s Assistant Coach of the Year for the Midwest Region in both 2013 and 2015 as he helped guide the Illini to a Big Ten Outdoor Championship and a top-10 finish at NCAA Championships. In 2015, Wheatley s success with the relay teams continued as the accolades continued to mount. The 4x400m relay team broke the school s outdoor record with a finish of 3:06.58 at NCAA Championships, finishing fourth overall. Indoors, the 4x400m relay notched another top-10 finish by placing eighth overall. The quartet also brought home Big Ten Championships at both indoor and outdoor meets. The 4x100m compounded the 4x400m relay success by taking home the indoor crown as well. In sprints, Wheatley led the Illini to numerous recordbreaking performances. Wheatley guided DJ Zahn as he broke school records in the indoor 200m and 400m, and the outdoor 200m on his way Big Ten titles in those three events and and bronze medal at NCAA Outdoors (400m). Wheatley had tremendous success in his first season, including his 4x100m relay team (Andrew Riley, Brandon Stryganek, Jade Ackerman, Stanley Azie) winning a Big Ten title and advancing to the NCAA Championships, capturing first-team All-America honors. He also qualified athletes in eight events to the NCAA West Preliminary Round of Championships while coaching seven athletes into the top-ten of the Illinois school record books. Wheatley was also instrumental in the success of senior Stanley Azie and freshman Brandon Stryganek. Azie represented Nigeria in the 2012 Olympics while also finishing second at the Big Ten Championships in the 100m. Stryganek placed second in the 200m and third in the 60m at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and advanced to the finals of the 100m at the outdoor championships. While at Virginia, Wheatley s athletes were successful on and off the track. In his three years at UVA, Wheatley guided athletes to two indoor All-American honors and three outdoor All-American honors. He had 11 regional qualifiers, three ACC champions and 16 All-ACC award winners. Wheatley s hurdlers broke school records in the 60mh, 110mh and 400mh hurdles for the men s and women s programs. Off the track, his athletes have been honored with six All-ACC Academic Team accolades and five USTFCCCA All-Academic Team certificates. Prior to coming to Virginia, Wheatley served as an assistant track and field and cross country coach at Austin Peay State University and the College of Charleston. During that time, Wheatley coached six conference champions, seven all-conference performers, four NCAA Regional Qualifiers and one NCAA Indoor Provisional Qualifier. Wheatley s athletic achievements include an impressive high school track career at Thomas Worthington, in Worthington, Ohio. Wheatley was heavily recruited by the University of Tennessee to run the 400m hurdles and 800m. Wheatley was a three-time All-SEC performer (1999, 2001, 2002), a two-time NCAA All-American (2001, 2002) and was a member of the school record breaking 4x400m relay team, running a time of 3:03.32. While at Tennessee, Wheatley was a member of the Volunteers 2001 NCAA Championship team, the 2002 NCAA runner-up squad and back-to-back SEC Championship teams. He was also elected team captain by his teammates in 2000 and was named the EdSouth s Men s Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002. Wheatley graduated from Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts degree in urban planning in the spring of 2002. The Coaching Staff bryan carrel pole vault coach 13th season Bryan Carrel enters his 13th season as a volunteer coach for the Illinois men s track and field team, working primarily with the pole vaulters. Carrel also is a volunteer assistant for the Illini women s program. During his coaching tenure, Carrel has helped coach a pair of NCAA qualifiers in the event, including Andrew Zollner, who competed for Illinois at three consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championships from 2007-09. In 2009, Zollner notched a career-best mark of 17-3 and placed second at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the third year in a row year. In 2008, Zollner vaulted over 17 feet for the first time in his career with a mark of 17-1, while freshman Will Schaeffer had a personal-best height of 16-2 3/4 at the Big Ten Championships to just miss the scoring column. On the women s side, Amanda Pintaro and Jackie Ziegler both set career-best indoor marks of 12-7 1/2 at the Carle/Health Alliance Invitational. During the 2007 season, Carrel guided three Illini women pole vaulters, Pintaro, Ziegler and Ashley Whittaker, to the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, as all three also scored for Illinois at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Prior to his time at Illinois, Carrel enjoyed nine years in the coaching profession, spending eight seasons at Indiana State as a pole vault and jumps coach and one season at Central Michigan. A four-time national qualifier in the pole vault during his collegiate career at Indiana State, Carrel is still the ISU outdoor school record holder in the event and was ranked among the top pole vaulters in the country during both his prep and collegiate careers. 2015 In Review 2015 Season in Review The Fighting Illini men s track and field team built upon its 2014 campaign with another historic season that saw the team go undefeated in individual meets, win the Big Ten Outdoor Championship for the first time in 21 years, finish as the runner-up at Big Ten Indoor Championships, have 11 first-team All-America honors and five athletes qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships under Head Coach Mike Turk. The Fighting Illini finished the indoor season ranked No. 21 in the USTFCCCA. The Orange and Blue were climbed as high as fifth nationally in the Track & Field News dual ranking during the outdoor season and finished No. 11 in the USTFCCCA. The team s biggest star, DJ Zahn, was named Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Athlete of the Year, while Mike Turk and Adrian Wheatley were named Midwest Region Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year. Indoor Season The Fighting Illini kicked off their 2015 campaign at the Border Battle in Iowa City with the Orange and Blue rolling to consecutive wins over the Hawkeyes and Tigers. In his first collegiate meet, Jonathan Wells won titles in the long jump and high jump. His high jump of 2.13m was the fourth-best mark in school history. Next up for the Illini was the Illini Classic where they, again, won convincingly. Wells built upon his success in the Border Battle by clearing 2.20m in the high jump, pushing up to number two on the Illinois top-10 list. The Orange and Blue continued their strong start to the season at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet. Ian Barnett highlighted the weekend by setting a new school record in the 3,000m with a time of 8:02.40. McAsey cracked also the top-10 when he finished the 800m in 1:8.71, the ninthfastest time in Illinois history. The Fighting Illini next traveled to Lincoln to compete at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite. The weekend was highlighted by an impressive performance by Davis Fraker. His weight throw toss exceeded the school recorded of 20.99m, hitting 21.80m. Zahn followed up his personal-best performance in the 60m by finishing third in the 200m with a time of 20.96, pushing him to second in Illinois history. At the Iowa State Classic, the Illini had one of their most successful meets of the year. McAsey s performance in the 800m, with a time of 1:47.29, was good enough for second on Illinois all-time top-10 list and earned him Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week. DJ Zahn won the 400m in a personal best time of 46.32, which moved him into fourth on Illinois all-time list. The No. 23 Fighting Illini concluded their indoor regular season by wining six events and taking the title at the Orange and Blue Open. The Orange and Blue took four titles on the track: Garrett Lee (800m), Brewster (3,000m), Corey Hammon (60m) and the 4x400 relay team. In the field, Dziedzic and Wells took home titles in the shot put and high jump. At the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio the Illini had a strong showing, taking home second place. Fraker scored a third-place finish when his weight throw traveled 22.50m, beating his own school record of 21.80m. DJ Zahn led the way for the Orange and Blue with an afternoon that saw him finish first in the 400m and 200m, both Illinois records, and anchored the team s 4x400 relay victory. For his performance in indoors and at Big Ten Championships, DJ Zahn was honored with Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and Track Athlete of the Indoor Championships. The Fighting Illini qualified for six events at NCAA Indoor Championships: DJ Zahn (400m, 4x400m relay), David Kendziera (4x400m relay), Kenneth Allen (4x400m relay), Jonathan Wells (high jump), and Davis Fraker (weight throw). The Illini finished 23rd at NCAA Indoor Championships with Zahn s time of 46.69 good for 7th in the 400m. The 4x400m relay team crossed the finish line in 3:06.58, but fell just short of the podium in fourth place. Outdoor Season On March 22, the Fighting Illini began the outdoor portion of their schedule with a trip to the UNLV Spring Invitational. The team s long throws led the charge as Fraker won the hammer throw with a toss of 63.15m, Brandon Noe won the discus with a heave of 52.94m, and Ben Dodds registered a mark of 65.03 in the javelin to move up to third on Illinois all-time list. 28 // 2016 Illinois men s Track & Field To continue the 2015 outdoor campaign, the team traveled to the EIU Big Blue Classic. After finishing day one in third place, the Orange and Blue took control in day two to win the meet. Wells had another strong day, winning both the long jump and high jump. Wells high jump of 2.17m mark tied him with Greg Shroka for the second-best clearance in school history. After the comeback victory at Eastern Illinois, the team beat out No.4 LSU and No.5 USC to win the Jim Click Shootout. Once again Fraker had an outstanding performance in the hammer throw, breaking his own school record with a throw of 65.36m, finishing second. The 3,000m saw the Illini dominate the field by having five athletes finish in the top six, including Ian Barnett s winning time of 8:26.09. Toepfer added a victory in the 3,000m steeplechase, far outpacing his opponents with a time of 9:15.83. The lone victory in sprints on the weekend came from Cam Viney in the 400m where his career-best time of 49.92 won gold and moved him into third on Illinois all-time list. After their trip out west, the Illini returned home to host the Illinois Twilight where they cruised to their fourth win of the outdoor season. The 4x100m relay team of Maat, Stryganek, Watkins, and Zahn broke the tape with a time of 39.60, breaking the facility record. Like the 4x100 relay, Fraker broke the facility record with a hammer throw of 65.12m in route to victory. DJ Zahn won two events and set a new Illinois record in the 200m on his way to being named Co-Track Athlete of the Week. The Orange and Blue next competed at the Drake Relays where they crowned five champions on their way to winning their third consecutive Hy-Vee Cup. In a field with seven other top-25 teams, the Illini were able to get victories from Barnett (5,000m), Viney (400m hurdles), Lafond (steeplechase), the 4x400m relay and the sprint medley relay. DJ Zahn s performance at the meet earned him Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week honors for the second week in a row. The 2015 regular season concluded with a meet at Iowa where two Illinois records were broken at the Musco Twilight. First, DJ Zahn sprinted to a crisp 20.53 time in the 200m to break Anthony Jones record of 20.62, set in 1994. The second record-breaking performance came on the field in the hammer throw. Davis Fraker unleashed a heave of 68.41m to obliterate the previous record of 65.36 that he set himself earlier in the season. The Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Michigan saw the Fighting Illini take home the 2015 Big Ten Outdoor crown for the first time since 1994, scoring 145 points. Individually, the Illini had five event winners and 18 others place in their events. Stryganek won the 100m dash with a career-best time of 10.27. Zahn became the third consecutive Illini to win the 400m dash at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 45.81. Finally, Cam Viney secured the 400m hurdles title by finishing with a time of 50.30. The other two event victories came via the relays with the 4x100m relay taking gold with a time of 39.80 and the 4x400m quartet taking the title with a time of 3:06.57. After one of the most successful seasons in Ilinois Track history, DJ Zahn and Head Coach Mike Turk were awarded three of the Big Ten outdoor track postseason awards. Zahn took home Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year honors, as well as Track Athlete of the Championships, while Turk was unanimously voted Coach of the Year. At NCAA Prelims, Zahn, Fraker, Kendziera, Viney, and Lafond each qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. In Eugene, Oregon in June the Fighting Illini notched a top-10 finish for the first time since 1988, tying Penn State for 10th place. The team earned 11 first-team All-America honors on their way to 17 points for the meet. DJ Zahn took the silver in the 400m with a time of 45.97, marking the first top-three finish by an Illini since Tim Simon finished third in 1988. Dylan Lafond took seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:42.96. The final individual event for the Illini saw David Kendziera take the bronze in the 400m hurdles, clocking a personal-best time of 49.56. The 4x100m relay team crossed with a season-best time of 39.36, taking home seventh place. Finally, the Illini s 4x400m relay team finished eighth with a time of 3:07.10 to secure the top-10 finish for the team. The Record Book the drake relays Nearly every year, Illinois travels to Des Moines, Iowa, for the annual Drake Relays, the most prestigious track meet in the Midwest. Year after year the Illini come away with impressive performances. Illinois started participating at the Drake Relays in 1911, the events second year of existence. At that meet, Illinois won the university half-mile relay in a world-record time of 1:31.6. The Illini also captured the two-mile relay. The marks and honors achieved by Illinois have been truly impressive over the years. After the world record in 1911, Illinois continued its relay dominance. The Illini have won eight 4x100-meter relays, 12 4x400- meter relays, 12 4x1600-meter relays and 10 4x800- meter relays in total, the most by a single university. In 1914, UI won the two-mile relay in a United States university record time. From 1920-25, Illinois won 11 relay titles, set two world records and established one other American record at Drake. In 1926, William Wallace became only the seventh person in Drake history to win two events when he captured the long and triple jumps. In the 1930s and 1940s, the Orange and Blue won multiple events virtually every year. In 1944, football star Buddy Young anchored the Illinois attack, winning the 100-yard dash and the long jump. Illinois captured the 880-yard, the mile, the 440-yard and the sprint medley relays. Great performances were spread throughout the 1950s and 60s. Don Laz tied for first in the pole vault in 1951, setting a Drake record. The 1952 two-mile relay set an American university record with a time of 7:31.6. The 1953 season saw former UI sprint coach Willie Williams win his Drake 100-yard title. Two other individuals and three relay teams also were victorious that year. Olympian Trenton Jackson won the 100-meters in 1964. Several Illinois varsity relay records were set at Drake in the 1970s, but none more impressive than that of the 1971 two-mile relay team, which recorded the fastest time in the nation for the year (7:21.5) and gave Illinois its 100th Drake Relays win. Charlton Ehizuelen became the first three-time winner of the Drake triple jump when he won his last title in 1977. He was also a two-time long jump winner. In 1994, three Illini won Drake titles. Anthony Jones took the 100-meters in :10.2, Daren McDonough finished first in the pole vault, clearing 18-0 1/4 and J.D. Teach won his second shot title (58-10 1/4). At the 91st Annual Drake Relays, the Illini continued to shine. The sprint medley relay team of Babatunde Ridley, Charles Burton, Sherman Armstrong and Jason Van Swol won the race in 3:16.89, which was the fastest time run in the event since 1990. Armstrong had a phenomenal weekend, as he shattered his own school record in the 400-meter hurdles, placing second in the invitational section of the race. In 2002, the Illini won titles in both the sprint medley relay and the 3,200-meter relay. Illinois first title of the meet came in the 4x800-meter relay where the team of Nick Gow, Robert Pligge, Tim Hobbs and Jason Van Swol won by the narrowest of margins,.01 seconds, over Kansas. Standing in eighth place at the midway portion of the race, Hobbs took control for the Illini. In his leg of the race, Hobbs took the Illini to the front of the pack, passing five teams in the final 300 meters before handing off to Van Swol, who capped the race by running a 1:48.0 final leg to earn the win. Abe Jones grabbed a first-place finish in the 400m hurdles in 2006, and in 2005 led the Illini to three first-place finishes. Jones individually won the 400- meter hurdles with a time of :50.8, and later teamed up with fellow juniors Nathan Vadeboncoeur, Adrian Walker, and Tramell Smith in the sprint medley relay for a record-breaking performance of 3:16.05, beating out Iowa State by.74 seconds for first place. Jones and Zach Glavash, Jeremy Kruidenier and Tim Hobbs ended the Relays with a first-place finish in the distance medley relay (9:40.80). Hobbs took Illinois back to the winner s circle the next day as he and teammates Anthony Moorman, Kendall McCroy, and Josh Harford won the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:22.04. Gakologelwang Masheto added to the Illini legacy in 2007, claiming the Special Invitational 400m title in a time of :46.24. In 2009, Riley broke the 110m hurdles school record at Drake Stadium. Riley clocked a time of :13.61 to place second in the event final and break Sherman Armstrong s school record of :13.72, which he set in 2000. In 2010, a pair of Illini picked up Drake titles. Andrew Riley won the crown in the 110m hurdles and Hunter Mickow finished first in the 10,000m. In 2012, senior Colin Mickow won the 10,000m title, while in 2011, the 4x100m relay team of Andrew Riley, Azeez Shogbuyi, Josh Zinzer and Stanley Azie broke an 18-year old school record to place first in the event. Kyle Engnell also won the 3,000m steeplechase in 2011. In 2013, the Illini won the inaugural HyVee Cup, scoring 38 points. Vanier Joseph won the 110m hurdles title with the second-fastest time in school history. The 400m, 1600m, 3200m relays grabbed runner-up honors, while the sprint medley and distance medley relays each finished third. In 2014, the Illini were crowned HyVee Cup Co-Champions, tying Arkansas with 34 points. Vanier Joseph won his second straight 110m hurdles title at the event, while the 400m, 1600m, sprint medley and distance medley relays all claimed top-three finishes. In 2015, the Orange and Blue made it a three-peat by taking the HyVee Cup once again with a total of 33 points. Ian Barnett grabbed the 5,000m title to start things off. The Illini added on when Cam Viney won the 400m hurdles, Dylan Lafond the steeplechase, the 4x400m relay and sprint medal relay to finish with five event crowns. The Illini men have been the most dominant squad in Drake Relays history, holding the record for the most overall titles (139), most individual titles (67) and most relay titles (72). In addition to the record number of Drake champions, seven Illinois athletes have been inducted into the relay s hall of fame. They are: high jumpers Don Osborn and Dike Eddleman, pole vaulter Don Laz, middle distance runner George Kerr, hurdler Lee Sentman, javelin thrower Milton Angier and jumper Charlton Ehizuelen. Three Illini coaches are also members of the hall of fame. Harry Gill and Leo Johnson were both inducted in 1977, while Gary Wieneke joined the duo in 1991.
