Patterson, who was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer last July, missed most of the 2008 preseason camp and the first seven games of the year as he underwent treatment for cancer. Battling cancer and its subsequent treatments have taken a huge toll on me physically, Patterson said. Even though my last check-up revealed that I am cancer free, the lingering effects of radiation and chemotherapy have impacted me more than expected. Right now the most important thing is for our Leatherneck football team and coaching staff to focus on winning our game against Southern Illinois, and eventually a Missouri Valley Football Conference Championship this season. I didn t want them focusing on me, Patterson continued. Patterson will continue to serve in an active role with the football program and the athletics department. Obviously this has been a very difficult revelation for the program, said director of athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. Yet I am very supportive, as Don s long-term well-being is without a doubt the highest priority for our program, our department and for our community. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mark Hendrickson will take over as acting head coach, effective immediately. Hendrickson served as acting head coach for the first seven games of the 2008 season while Patterson was undergoing cancer treatments. One of the Missouri Valley Football Conference s all-time winningest coaches, Patterson guided the Fighting Leathernecks to three playoff berths, a pair of conference titles and a No. 1 national ranking. He amassed an overall record of 63-47 and coached five of the top eight offensive teams in school history. In addition, Patterson coached eight conference players of the year. 2 SOUTHERN Illinois preview This Saturday marks the 2009 Missouri Valley Football Conference opener for the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks as they face at Hanson Field. What is a Leatherneck? holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps official nickname, The Fighting Leathernecks, in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray Rock Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine s official seal, bulldog mascot and nickname. 25 Years: MVFC Silver Anniversary Team As a part of the Missouri Valley Football Conference Silver Anniversary Celebration, you are invited to participate in the selection of the all-time football team. The ballots are accessible through www.valleyfootball25.org, and you are limited to one ballot per site visit. The Missouri Valley Football Conference was founded in 1985 as the Gateway Conference and competed under that banner from 1985-2007. As part of a rebranding initiative in 2008, the league changed its name to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. F I G H T I N G L E A T H E R N E C K S announces the first ever Paint it Purple campaign for the Missouri Valley Football Conference s Television Game of the Week. Similar to a white out, fans are asked to wear purple to the game in order to paint the stands in a sea of purple to support the Fighting Leathernecks in their Missouri Valley Football Conference opener for the 2009 season. football wants to see the stands Painted Purple on the televised game that will be seen throughout the Midwest. We want to see the stands covered in purple, said senior captain Trokon Tompo. Having our fans behind us and supporting us in purple will help create a home field advantage for us in this big conference game. The last three meetings between Western and Southern have been decided by 10, one and seven points respectively. The Leathernecks set a conference record with 18-straight victories over the Salukis, before SIU rattled off the last seven wins in the series. This Saturday s game is Family Weekend with kickoff slated for 6:07 p.m. at Hanson Field. The Last Time Western Faced Southern... Walter Payton Award candidate Herb Donaldson became all-time leading rusher, but the Leathernecks were handed a 24-14 loss by Southern Illinois. The Leathernecks were forced to play from behind as the Salukis scored twice in the first 12 minutes. Larry Warner darted for a 56-yard rushing touchdown at the 8:58 mark, the only play of the drive, and Southern strung together an 8-play, 54-yard drive on its next possession to take a 14-0 lead before the end of the period. After a missed field goal by the Salukis early in the second quarter, the Leathernecks drove 80 yards on 13 plays and got on the scoreboard with a 6-yard run by Donaldson with 7:34 left in the half. Southern took a 14-7 lead into the half, and stretched it to 10 midway through the third on a 21-yard field goal, but Western responded with a six-play 28-yard scoring drive that was set up by a fumble recovery by defensive end Teague Dentino. Carl Sims caught an 8-yard pass from Matt Barr to bring the Leathernecks within three, 17-14, at the 1:20 mark. Mike McEachern blocked the fourth punt in as many games for the Leathernecks after the Salukis first drive of the fourth quarter, but the ball was recovered by the Salukis behind the line of scrimmage and advanced for a first down. The extended drive resulted in a missed field goal. Both teams traded punts for the entire fourth quarter. The Leathernecks began their final drive at the 2:45 mark with a nine-yard completion to Todd Speight, followed by a gain of seven by Donaldson on third-and-one. Barr s next pass attempt was intercepted by Korey Lindsey at the Leathernecks 48-yard line and was returned to the end zone for the Salukis first touchdown since the opening quarter, giving Southern a 24-14 lead with 1:36 left. Jason Williams forced fumble in the second quarter tied the FCS career record of 13. 2009 LEATHERNECK FOOTBALL Western s last W over Southern... The date was Sept. 22, 2001 and Western defeated Southern, 38-21, at Hanson Field for the 18th-straight victory in the series. Starting in the 2002 season, the Salukis put a stop to Western s wins with a tight 54-52 win in Carbondale. That win was the start to seven-straight over the Leathernecks. Fighting to take the win column back, the closest Western came to a victory was the last time the teams played at Hanson Field (Nov. 3, 2007). Then-No. 19 led for three and a half quarters but sixth-ranked Southern Illinois drove 80 yards for the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth to take a 10-9 win from the Leathernecks. League-Opening Result The Leathernecks were unable to open league play with a win last season as they lost a 24-22 battle at No. 13 South Dakota State and the last conference opener that resulted in a W for the Leathernecks was a 19-7 win over Indiana State in 2007. The Leathernecks are 14-10 in league openers and open league play against a ranked opponent for the second-straight season.

3 GAME NOTES Sportsmanship: A Leatherneck practice College football teams are planning to start the season off on a courteous note. As part of a sportsmanship initiative, the American Football Coaches Association and NCAA are encouraging schools to arrange teamwide handshakes on the field before kickoff. Grant Teaff, executive director of the AFCA, says college football players and teams are in a pressure-packed environment and that encouraging respect and sportsmanship is important. Coaches are required to shake before and after games, but having players do it in an organized way is new. The handshake is only planned for the first week of games, and is not mandatory, though, Teaff says all schools have been asked to participate. Harmon: A True Marine Redshirt-freshman fullback Mike Harmon is a 23-year old former Marine who spent four years and three months of active duty in the Marine Corps. The 5-foot- 11 230-pound Peoria, Ill., native served three tours in Iraq in Infantry and was the Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year last season. NFL pipeline annually has one of the country s highest number of alumni on active NFL rosters. Six of the last seven Super Bowl championship teams have included former Leathernecks. Super Bowl XLII featured a Leatherneck on each sideline - Giants starting offensive guard Rich Seubert and Patriots starting safety Rodney Harrison. The newest Leatherneck in the league for the 2009 season is Jason Williams. Williams was the first FCS player taken in the 2009 NFL Draft, selected as the Dallas Cowboys first pick of the draft. F I G H T I N G L E A T H E R N E C K S First Ranked Opponent No. 8 ranked Southern Illinois is Western s first FCS opponent of the season currently ranked in the national top-25 polls. After facing the Salukis, the Leathernecks will have five weeks off from ranked opponents before wrapping up the season with back-to-back ranked opponents in No. 3 Northern Iowa and No. 16 South Dakota State. Western has earned votes since the beginning of the season, but has not yet been ranked this season. Western was ranked in all 11 games last season, with its highest ranking of No. 12 (week of Oct. 12). Last season the Leathernecks went 1-3 against ranked opponents, as No. 17 Western upset a No. 6 North Dakota State, 27-22, in Fargo. On Commercial Television Saturday s Missouri Valley Football Conference Game of the Week can be seen live on FS Midwest and FCS Central, it will also be aired tape-delay on wiutv3 (Macomb). Scott Warmann will have the play-by-play call, alongside analyst Danan Hughes and sideline reporter Mick Shaffer. The Leathernecks have a 10-11 record since 1985 on commercial television after recording a 1-1 record this season with TV games at Sam Houston State and Northern Illinois. Battle of the Special Teams Southern Illinois punter Scott Ravanesi received the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week this past week after averaging 46.4 yards on eight punts, three of which were downed inside the 20-yard line. For the season, Ravanesi has a punt average of 44.79, good enough for a No. 2 ranking in the nation. The week prior, wide receiver Todd Speight earned the special teams honor after he after he totaled 295 return yards (207 kickoff yards, 88 punt yards) in the game against Stephen F. Austin. Speight returned both a kick and a punt for a touchdown, which is the first time in school history that a player returned both for a touchdown in a game. Speight averages 23.20 yards per punt return, which is the third-best return average in the nation. He returns 1.67 punts per game and has totaled 116 yards in five returns. Leatherneck Passing Game The Salukis show a pretty even offensive attack averaging 226.3 rushing yards per game and 218.7 passing yards per game, but the Leathernecks average 282.7 passing yards per game, which is ranked as the No. 10 passing offense in the country. Western averages 80.7 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Matt Barr opened the season throwing for 437 yards and three touchdowns to lead the nation in passing efficiency. After the last two losses, Barr continues to rank in the top-20 at No. 19 nationwide, completing 52-of-90 (57.78 comp) passes for 824 yards this season. Senatus Remains in Top-10 in Nation for Receiving Yards per Game Lito Senatus connected with Barr in game one for 11 catches, resulting in 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the season as a whole, Senatus has recorded 24 catches in three games for 390 yards. Averaging eight catches per game, Senatus holds the No. 8 spot in the FCS statistics nationwide. Leading the Defensive Efforts Kyle Glazier led the Leatherneck defense last game with 13 total tackles, one sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception, which he returned for 14 yards. Mike Stieren registered a pair of sacks and 2.5 TFL s and Mike Garoppolo added an additional sack. The defensive efforts combined for eight TFL s resulting in a loss of 21 yards. Overall, Glazier leads the defense in the 2009 season with 30 total tackles. MVFC Player of the Week Honorees Matt Barr was the first co-offensive player of the week in the Missouri Valley Football Conference this season. He wasn t the only Leatherneck to receive conference honors as junior offensive lineman Mike Lamphear earned his first MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week honor in the same week. GoLeathernecks.com

The 106th Defense The 2009 defense is known as the 106th since it is the 106th defense to ever play football at University. Being as is the Leathernecks, the defense developed a battle flag that represents them as a unit. The motto that was selected for the 106th is a Latin phrase that translates what I do, I do well. The 106th Defense is divided up by class from the Generals (seniors), the Colonels (juniors), the Majors (sophomores), the Captains (redshirt-freshmen), down to the Lieutenants (freshman). The flag of the 106th is different than any previous or future battle flag, just as this year s defense is different from any past or future defensive units. It will be proudly carried and defended into each and every battle this season.
