COURSE PROGRAMME COURSE NAME: 21631120 Basic Course in Steel Structures GROUP: CREDITS: INRANU04A3 3 cr TEACHER: TIME: 01.09.2005-31.04.2006 OBJECTIVE: This bilingual course aims at providing students with solid background on the structural steel construction. RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: Recommended background: Structural Engineering I and II STUDY METHODS: Hands-on design experience and skills will be gained and learned through problem sets and a comprehensive design project. An understanding of real world open- ended design issues will be developed. The student is a member of a learning group and attends the contact sessions, seminars and excursions. The course equals 80 student- hours, 48 lesson-hours + 16 practice- hours + 16 independent work hours. 1

COURSE TIMETABLE: Week Topic Duration 1 INTRODUCTION - JOHDANTO This course covers the basics of structural steel construction. Material properties, steel products and structural systems are presented. The student updates the Structural Engineering I and II content and takes part in the design projects. As the projects in the prevoius courses are studied with the help of tables they are now designed with EC3 - criteria. Much of the source material and readings are in the address: http://www.terasrakenneyhdistys.fi and in the publications TERASRAKENNE-romppu and Saarinen Eero: Teräsrakenteiden Suunnittelu, Eurocode, Electrical version, Teräsrakenneyhdistys. The study books present in more detail the themes, contents, readings and source material. They are abreviations of the course's web-presentation, which are in the address: http://amk.fi/tekniikka user: amk@amk.fi id: jasenamk12. The still under construction material presents themes like portal frames, multi-storey houses, combination structure and special structures. ELearning materials like ACCESS, SSEDTA and ESDEP are developed for the smooth introduction of Eurocode.
