2008 The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, TIAS started its operations on 1 August 2008 as a joint venture by University of Turku and Turku School of Economics. In 2008 and 2009 the TIAS was funded mainly through the financing allocating for the so-called consortium phase in the merger process between University of Turku and Turku School of Economics. Additional funding was received from the Foundation for Economic Education and Turku University Foundation. The Board for the TIAS in 2008 and 2009 has been comprised of the following 10 members: Vice Rector Markus Granlund, TSE (as of 11 September 2008), Professor Joel Kivirauma, UTU, Professor Anne Kovalainen, TSE, Professor Auvo Kostiainen, UTU, Professor Jukka Mähönen, UTU, Professor Pekka Niemi, UTU, Lecturer Krista Ojutkangas, UTU, Professor Veli-Matti Ritakallio, UTU, dean Marja Vauras, UTU and Professor Veli-Pekka Viljanen, UTU. Dean Marja Vauras was nominated as the Chair of the Board and Professor Anne Kovalainen as the Vice-Chair. The TIAS has a part-time (25%) Co-ordinator, Adjunct Professor Ulla Hytti from TSE. The Board held five meetings in 2008. In 2008, the primary focus was on organizing the first application process for the TIAS. There were 70 applications in the TIAS that were subjected to international evaluation. On December 2008, the first ten applicants were selected in the TIAS for the period of 1.3.2009-28.2.2012. Based on the evaluation statements the quality of applications was high. 2009 The first researchers started in the TIAS on 1.3.2009. During 2009 the following researchers were appointed in the TIAS. Collegium Researchers: Lydia Kokkola, School of English. Silence and Sexuality: Reticent Responses to Adolescent Sexuality (appointed as an Academy Research Fellow for the period of 1.8.2009-31.12.2009). Pekka Länsineva, Faculty of Law. TIAS activities On 2 March, 2009 a get-together meeting between the appointed researchers and the TIAS Board was organized. The researchers presented their research proposals for the Board. On 16 April 2009, a formal opening seminar for the TIAS was organized. The seminar was officially opened by rector Keijo Virtanen. Key note presentations were given by Professor Barbro Klein from SCAS, Sweden and by Professor Hannu Nurmi from University of Turku. Collegium Researcher Timo Ruusuvirta held a Keynote on behalf of the TIAS researchers. The TIAS researchers organise joint lunches and research seminars on a regular basis. The aim of these meetings is to engage in multidisciplinary discussion between the researchers and to identify areas of mutual interest. The meetings have also been an important forum for the TIAS researchers to discuss and reflect upon both philosophical and pragmatic 4

issues with regard to conducting research and operating in the new TIAS community. On 2009 the TIAS researchers met on 6 April, 12 May, 25 August, 8 September, 29 September, 20 October, 10 November and 1 December to discuss their research. A joint meeting between the researchers and the TIAS Board was also organized on 1 December 2009. On 13 August, the Boards for TIAS and TCSM (Turku Collegium for Science and Medicine) organized a joint meeting to discuss areas of mutual interest and co-operation. It was decided to organize a joint workshop for the research in both collegia in 2010 and a joint research seminar in 2011. On 14 October 2009, the TIAS Board organized an excursion to Swedish Collegium of Advanced Study (SCAS). Dean Marja Vauras, Professors Jukka Mähönen and Veli-Pekka Viljanen and the TIAS Co-ordinator Ulla Hytti participated the visit. The visit included a meeting with the Directors Björn Wittrock and Barbro Klein from SCAS, a joint lunch with the SCAS researchers and participation at a SCAS research seminar. The goal was to develop and strengthen co-operation between the SCAS and TIAS and learn from the experiences of the SCAS in the future development of the TIAS. An important part of the activities for the TIAS in 2009 included forming the working methods and operation of, for example in supporting the researchers in their activities and for organising the TIAS activities in 2010. The future of TIAS materialized through the new round of applications and new positions, own premises and a director for the TIAS has also been a major concern. Together with the TCSM, the TIAS drafted an action plan as an annex for the new strategy for the University of Turku. The Board held seven meetings in 2009. The TIAS researchers have contributed to different research activities including publications, organization of and presentations in scientific and other seminars and conferences as well as networking activities including research visits to international universities. The researchers have also contributed to teaching and supervising of theses. The TIAS researchers have also been active in contributing to the societal influence of the university by giving statements to governmental bodies and giving virtual and live presentations to the general public.
