3 Welcome to Kokkola! Kokkola is the administrative, financial and cultural centre of the Central Ostrobothnia region. The city of Kokkola was founded in 1620 by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. It is said that the town s Finnish name, Kokkola, may originate from the name Kokkolahti (Kokko bay). It was the name of the bay which pushed in from the sea, all the way to Kirkonmäki (church hill). According to the legend, eagles (kokko or kotka in Finnish) used to sit on large rocks in the bay. In the earliest documents, the town s name is Karlabi, the name behind its present-day Swedish name, Karleby. Chemical industry and related industries are central to our town. Kokkola is also an eminent centre for business and education. With your focus being on studies, you made an excellent choice when coming to Kokkola. Our town does have more to offer than just high quality education, such a many leisure activities and events taking place. Get to know what the town has to on the cultural scene, may it be in the form of music, theater or movies. It is a great way to meet locals and get familiar with our culture a little better! When mentioning Kokkola, you cannot miss out on our active sport teams such as the leading Finnish volleyball champions, Kokkolan Tiikerit, or the ice hockey team Hermes, playing in the second highest league, or then the local football club KVP currently in the second highest league. Kokkola is a maritime city, you can feel the presence of the sea where ever you go. During the summer time, go to visit the Tankkari Island and its legendary lighthouse. You can enjoy the seaside without getting on a boat: you can take a walk along the nature trail near Villa Elba, enjoy the seaside nature and try to spot some of the birds living there. Remember to check out the Sea Park, the various swimming bays around Kokkola and biking trails along the seaside. Kokkola thus offers a variety of ways to spend your free time. 7 Tankar The lighthouse island of Tankar is a versatile destination offering the leisurely visitor unforgettable experiences in the archipelago and an insight into the history of life by the sea. Old fishing cabins and the café and guest cabin make up a delightful village in the archipelago, which is overlooked by the old chapel located on its own cliff. The Seal Hunting Museum showcases the old culture of seal hunting, and the area around the lighthouse presents the pilot and lighthouse keeper s families life on the island. It is possible to stay overnight in true island style. You can choose the piloting station rooms at the Tankar Inn, the old rooms of the lighthouse master and his men, or the guest cabin in the fishing village.
