Weather is most probably still warm, but will the local inhabitants warm up? FIFA, please stand up! Eminem and enemies... According to Finnish Swedish newspaper HBL the Brazilian football legend Romario is one of the biggest boys to critisize FIFA. Cheers! Brazilians hate the international football federation FIFA. Building stadiums and making FIFA happy has cost billions. Whilst you are one the millions who will watch the 2014 FIFA World Cup at home in your cosy sofa, people in Brazil don t have access to clean water and waste service in the favelas, which got their name from a tree. TV channel Arte s program Naturopolis opened my eyes for Rio de Janeiro, how wrong you can go in planning a city on the cost of the world s most valuable nature. The circumstances in Rio, where the Grand Final will be played on July 13th at the renewed Maracana, are all but great for everyone. At the same time daily people should be able to work, get food and follow football! Yes football! Since the FIFA World Cup should really be for the Brazilian people. 4 Party like it s 1999! In 1999 my big sister told me about how a Belgian boy trained soccer with passion. June 2000 Belgium hosted the European Championships together with Holland. In that tournament Belgium was seen as a true contender. You remember Marc Wilmots, the current manager of the Red Devils, Diables Rouges. After Euro2000 songs about success have been silent, France was big when Belgium was little. In 2003 I pissed around for one week near Brussels getting closer to the Belgian school system and sports at school. Very soon it became clear that most of the guys were only interested in hanging around town, getting drunk and just keeping their parents satisfied at school. Not a serious word about doing sports with passion and talking about it. The culture seemed to have changed since that popcorn throwing gang (on a hockey match in 2004), now Belgium is serious. At least their football is. After winning their qualifying group in style, leaving Croatia behind, the road to Rio is open. In 2003 many in Brussels cheered for Anderlecht, Finland s Hannu Tihinen made the team interesting also from a Finnish perspective. The scarf was ugly (purple) and the success was miserable. All eyes were put towards tennis: Justin Henin and Kim Clijsters, French and Flam. Above the hassling EU, Belgium in Finland has been a quite unknown spot. Yes my big sister lived there for almost one year, but the only thing I remember: she told us cleaning and pipeline service were slow and that she hanged out on a Scandinavian Bar singing karaoke. Add Negredo (Man City) Mata (Chelsea) and Thiago (Bayern) and the Golden Paella is finished! David Villa still has some goals hidden in his villa. For Spain s opponents. The wrong tactic is to chase the Bulls, you won t catch them. Instead create something of your own and maybe England will end up as the true Red Devils of the tournament. Now they even have a psychologist come penalties Three Lions also rely on the finally released goal-line technology. At least, now they can t blame on the linesman. Maybe on Gary Lineker... Commentator Gary Lineker s famous line Football is a game that lasts 90 minutes and Germany wins has not died out yet. Fit und Gesund the Mannschaft can do anything. Indeed, it s a shame Finland has never been able to overcome a tough qualifying stage and prove the rest of the World we are tough enough to succeed in football, the most covered sport around the globe. Wait, we? How can I say we when I m international and actually don t like the fact the World is divided into countries and competing with them in sports? Maybe! And if Finland goes to the Euro2016 in France it feels like nothing since it will be the first time 24 teams qualify to Europe s edition of the World Cup, not 16 like before. Have a Koff (a beer). Should I not support Finland? Instead love silly Sweden? Nordic is out so I ll support England and France. Back-to-Brazil! The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil will be played with the system we are used to. 32 teams qualified to the tournament, 16 will qualify for the playoff rounds consisting of four rounds all the way to the final. Looking at the team list it s once again clear Africa have too many teams in the competition. The fact FIFA let the World Cup be a mix of real good teams and really bad teams is unacceptable. The World Cup should absolutely be a mix of the very best just like MTV s Greatest Hits in the good old times when Paul King was serving us the best music videos and you could watch the FIFA World Cup Live on Eurosport in English, no matter where you lived. Shame on you local dummies! Me want international! I want to go beyond boarders just like CNN Patrick Snell goes, along with Jonas von Wendt (HBL), he s my favorite football reporter. My head is a mess like England s defense, the favelas of Rio and the French team after their behavior fiasco at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A bunch of spoiled child, let s go wild! No Terry Baddoo on CNN anymore! If we re still going to follow the 2014 World Cup despite people have died during the stadia constructions and Brazil s problems in giving money to the right projects, let s samba! No matter what channel you are tuning into I must say the English and Finnish commentators are above all the other. You just can t commentate a football match being silent in 90 minutes like on Swedish television. The games are just around the corner and after reading World Soccer s Preview Magazine including coaches interviews it s more than clear. Spain is ready to take their fourth big trophy in six years. Euro Champions in 2008, World Champions in 2010, Euro Champs again in 2012, now looking for a complete Quattro, this is Spain. Vincent Del Bosque is ready to drive like a bull to get the men from Madrid eager for more after two teams (!) have met in a historic 2014 UEFA Champions League Final in Lisbon. Real Madrid s and Athletic Madrid s success at the World s most respected Club Competition has not been unrecognized by anyone, following football. Despite the fact ice hockey is the coolest sport in the World because of its electricity and speed, even I wake up when a big footy tournament is under way. Especially, when it is getting tough, that s why I love France. If France wake up at all, they wake up when the Eiffel Tower is burning. Former head knocker Zinedine Zidane and today s Airbus Frank Ribery may be bad boys, but so do I. Last but not least a message to the legendary football reporter Jonas von Wendt (working for the biggest daily Swedish speaking newspaper Hufuvudstadsbladet in Finland): I m sorry I ve mentioned FIFA a number of times in this story. Jonas is allergic to the name FIFA. Jonas doesn t like the fact that you are only allowed to drink Budweiser (Official Sponsor) during the World Cup. I hope Helsingin Sanomat s Rio reporter Maria Manner gets some better beer in Brazil than von Wendt in South Africa in Mc Donald s and Coca-Cola, that s the way..of a FIFA kind. Money to the rich, FIFA is I love Coca-Cola! Their Brazil2014 bottles are sexy! Finally, Brazil is unready for the World Cup and in addition they still have the 2016 Olympic Games coming their way. What happens to the stadiums after the World Cup is a big worry for everyone but FIFA. Anyway, now let s play football! In between, play with the girls on the beaches, what a way to spend your valuable summer. You could do something better, like clean the ugly streets of Helsinki and teach our sluggish people to drink less. And hey, I wasn t drunk and crazy when I wrote this, I was just as mad as you are about the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

7 Viherlaaksosta viheriölle Olin 5-vuotias kun Tanska voitti jalkapallon EM-kisat Ruotsissa! Siis Ruotsissa! Ajatelkaa, että kisat olivat siellä. Itse en ollut paikalla mutta todennäköisesti elin jo silloin hengessä mukana, enkä vain Yleisradion kautta. Nimittäin innostukseni jalkapalloon, se alkoi 1992 kun muutimme uuteen omakotitaloon, jonka sisällä näkyi Eurosport ja ulkopuolella pystyi pelaamaan futista niin, että nurmikko sai uuden ilmeen. Turnaukset kolmen kollin kesken olivat niin kova juttu, että turnauksissa piti olla pokaalit ja fyysistä vääntöä mikäli joku toimi vastoin sääntöjä. Matseissa kaksi poikaa pelasi vastakkain ja maalivahdilla oli tietysti hanskat. Nyrkkeilyä varten hehe... Naapurin isä tunsi Brasilian maajoukkueen päävalmentajan, joten taloyhtiömme hengitti jalkapalloa haalin nimpparina lisää vauhtia jalkapalloinnostukseeni saatuani isoäidiltäni lehtisen, johon saattoi liimata World Cup 94 tarroja. Muistan miten iso USA:ssa pelattu fudiksen MM-turnaus oli kyseessä. Muistan miten tuttuni sanoi, ettei Ruotsia saa kannustaa, olin ja olen edelleen visusti eri mieltä. Muistan suuria nimiä kuten Bulgarian Hrsisto Stoichkov ja Ruotsin Thomas Brolin. Isi oli opettanut, että kovimmat potkut on Hollannin Ronald Koemanilla. Isi tsiigasi 90-luvun alussa telkusta Englannin valioliigaa. Itse tykkäsin, että se oli tylsintä mitä saattoi olla, halusin leikkiä. Veikkausliigan lehti, jossa Jari Litmanen komeili, YLEn näyttämät Mestareiden Liigan matsit, serkuilta saatu Jari Litmanen-juliste ja fudiksen MM-turnaus 1994 kuitenkin muuttivat asiaa. Isosiskot olivat raivoissaan halutessani ripustaa MM 94-julisteita isoon aulaan yläkerrassa. Pikkuserkut Ruotsista ajoivat varta vasten kesämökiltämme saaresta Siuntiosta katsomaan ratkaisumatseja luoksemme. Pettymys oli suuri kun Ruotsi tippui Brasiliaa vastaan semifinaalissa Romarion maalilla. Yöllä valvottiin, ruutu oli 21tuumaa ja matsiseura oli parasta. Ruotsi otti pronssia. Finaali-iltana oli isin mummon mökillä, jossa ukkonen oli pauhannut koko illan. Itse loppuottelusta tuli myös todellinen ukkosmyrsky kun Roberto Baggio veti ratkaisevan pilkun ylärimaan ja Brasilia voitti MM-finaalin. Se harmittaa minua vieläkin. Halusin, että Italia olisi voittanut finaalin, jotta naapurin brassailu Brasilian kanssa olisi keventynyt sitten pamahti kun opin tuntemaan luokkani parhaan futarin Tonyn, joka levitti sellaista fudishuumaa, että alta pois. Hän on minun lisäkseni maailman suurin Jari Litmanenfani ja oli käärmeissään jos jokin Mestareiden Liiga-matsi oli jäänyt aikaisen nukkumisajan takia näkemättä. Fudis voi näet olla niin tylsää jos pallo pyöritellään kuin Ajax pahimmillaan: puolta kaarta samaa saarta, ei edes yritetä hyökätä tai tehdä maalia Parhaimmillaan jalkapallo voi olla vauhdikasta ja viihdyttävää, Chelsea ja Bayern München sen osaavat. Voi lätkäkin (ei HIFK ja New York Rangers) olla tylsää puolustuspeliä mutta siellä ollaan kuitenkin aina luistimilla ja kaukalossa sattuu ja tapahtuu, välillä turhan paljonkin. Viheriöllä kävellään 90 minuuttia pallon perässä ja Saksa voittaa vai miten se meni. Ei! Ranska voittaa, sähäkkäin mielenkiintoisin pahin Brasilian haastaja jo vuodesta Sen takia kannustan Ranskaa, että heillä on sellaista luovuutta ja jännitystä jalkapallossa joka löytyy parhailta joukkueilta jääkiekossa. Brasilialla on myös se jännitys mutta heitä en voi kannustaa koska he ovat jalkapallon Jokerit, toki paljon lievempänä. Suomen Huuhkajat eli A-maajoukkue pelaa parhaimmillaan maailman parasta maapeliä, huimaavalla vauhdilla hyökäten. Valitettavasti vain maalintekotaito ja taktinen osaaminen ovat jättäneet Suomen toistaiseksi rannalle suurimmista bileistä. EM 2016 siintää huuhkajien silmissä, Ranskan pidettäviin kisoihin pääsee ensimmäistä kertaa jopa 24 joukkuetta, turhan paljon sanon minä. Ennen pääsi vain 16 ja huipputaso oli taattua. Kahdeksan karavaania lisää ja Suomi ilmaiseksi mukaan samppanjan maistiaisiin. Muissa maissa osataan pelata jalkapalloa ja ryypätä tyylillä. Otetaan Brasiliasta esimerkkiä: iloista, kansainvälistä, letkeätä ja reipasta meininkiä. Ennen Ranskan EM-karsintoja otetaan kaikki irti Riosta. Samba Carneval!

8 MM 1998 aikaan Eurosport ei näkynyt kunnolla kotonamme mutta katsoin sitä silti. Kanava kiehui kansainvälisyyttä, mikä sai minut pomppimaan riemusta. Yossou N Dourin ja Axel Redin esittämä MM-laulu ei koskaan unohdu. Se oli vain niin coolia ja mageeta, että kisat olisivat elegantissa Ranskassa ja että Eurosport näyttäisi kisoja 24tuntia vuorokaudessa. Hitsin vanhemmat kun eivät tilanneet Eurosportia takaisin puolta vuotta aiemmin Unelmani toteutui kun kaikkien aikojen Brasilian piti voittaa ylivoimaisesti MM-kultaa. Mukana olivat kaikki Ronaldot, Bebetot, Roberto Carlokset, Cafut etc. Vain Romario oli poistunut takavasemmalle. Ronaldosta piti tulla Ranskan kisojen suuri sankari. Miten kävikään? Jo alkusarjassa pikkuruinen Norja voitti Brasilian ja toive nousi: nyt tämä ärsyttävä joukkue häviäisi. Valitettavasti Englanti tippui Argentiinalle ja Hollanti juuri Brasilialle. Syntyi suuri sota: Hollannin pelaajat yrittivät semifinaalissa muka tahallaan vahingoittaa superlupaus Ronaldoa. Jo alkusarjassa olin huomannut miten ennakkoluulotonta ja letkeää futista isäntämaa Ranska pelasi. Rupesin kannustamaan ennakkoluulotonta, täysin puskista isoihin valoihin pompannutta Ranskaa. MM 2002 ärsytti enemmän kuin koskaan. Olin satsannut enemmän kuin koskaan. Kaikki lehdet, ennakot, maailman ensimmäinen Net-MD-soitin ja ensimmäiset silmälasit oli. Mitä Ranska tekee? Kaikkien aikojen ennakkosuosikki häviää kaikki ottelunsa ja lähtee ennenaikaisesti Rivieralle. Brasilia voittaa MM-kisat eikä Eurosport edes näyttänyt Etelä-Korean kisoja. Fiasko! MM 2002 oli kiva leikkiä itähelsinkiläistä coolia ghettoa ja katsella Itiksessä MM-matsia Brasilia-Belgia (4-0) isosiskon shoppaillessa. Tuolloin unelmoin Sonyn taulutelkkarista ylitse kaiken. Vasta MM 2010 pystyin himassa katsomaan virallisen sponsorin taulutelkkarista skaboja. Jalkapallon MM-kisat, Sony ja McDonald s ne vaan kuuluvat yhteen. MM 2006 olin latautunut Spiegelin loistavalla kisaoppaalla ja seuraamalla koko futista eri kanavilta. Ranska oli Saksassa häkellyttävän hyvä ja olisi voittanut pytyn ilman Zidanen hölmöilyä finaalissa. Se oli parasta ikinä kun Ranska voitti Brasilian semifinaalissa ja Champs-Elysée lauloi Zidane tekee maalin. Finaalin jälkeen pilkkabändi teki toisenlaisen version Zidane puski häntä (lue Italian Marco Materazzia). CNN:n MM-lähetykset olivat loistavia ja Patrick Snellistä, joka nyt seuraa minua Twitterissä, tuli suurin idolini. Suomalaiset eivät mielestäni vieläkään ole tajunneet, että maailmassa tulee nähdä asioita yhtä kansainvälisesti kuin CNN International, jolla on toimittajia molemmin puolin rapakoita. Becky Andersonista tuli todellinen Saksan ekspertti. Saksan MM-turnaus oli seuraavia asioita lukuun ottamatta maailman makeinta: 1. Ranskan katkera finaalitappio rankkareilla sinänsä upealle Italialle, kuuntelin kisojen aikana italialaista nettiradiota 2. Emme isin kanssa onnistuneet saamaan Playoff-lippuja Berliiniin 3. MM 2010 oli Ranskalta lapsellisinta ikinä, FIFA näytti taas ikävimmät puolensa kieltämällä paikalliset oluet, HBL:n Jonas von Wendt oli kisojen aikana kuuminta rautaa mutta pelimestoilla oli kylmää ja nyt stadikat taitavat seisoa tyhjinä. Tylsää oli myös, että Espanja voitti MM-kultaa. EM-kultaa 2008, MM-kulta 2010, EM-kulta on Ranskan, Englannin tai ihan jonkun muun vuoro voittaa. Mutta ei kiitos Brasilialle ja Espanjalle! 12 Group a Group B Group C Group D Group A - El Selecao should not have any problems with Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon. Want-to-be sports experts of course now say Croatia and Mexico may cause the Brazilians headache but no. The only thing they can cause is a good warm-up run for the hosts with playoffs ahead. As far as I m concerned, El Selecao has never struggled in a group phase and will this time neither. The only question is: can Croatia and Mexico get motivated in a group with the hosts and give something extra. Reports say Mexico is in form, Croatia have a fine history but stands as a big question mark, at least for me. Brazil-Mexico will be a cracker. Mexico-Croatia is key for grabbing 2nd place. Prediction: Brazil and Mexico through with close margin to Croatia. Group B - Spain, Netherlands, Chile and Australia are in a group where the story already is written. The souls of the sun and the skaters of speed are already in the semifinals, for some. However, no free seats to the Playoffs are given. Spain must play to get its Seat car going, if the game gets dull, upsets are possible. The Netherlands or let us just say Holland is for now the biggest bike of the group and certainly also one of the biggest favorite grabbing the Cup. For Spain and Holland it s all about getting the game rolling. While Chile and Australia must play brave, they just can t let defensive play rule their football. If they do so, it s out and goodbye. Red hot Chili Peppers and scrambled surfers from Australia, a truly easy combination for Super-Spaniards and Holy-Holland. Still no free seats are given before the games are played. Anything can happen. Prediction: Holland and Spain through with a big margin to the others. Time to buy some Big Mac meals at the Official Restaurant? 13 Group E Group F Group G Group H Group E France will make a baguette of this for mademoiselle. Switzerland, Honduras and Ecuador can at no circumstances upset the bunch of crispy caviars unless they again act as a bunch of spoiled child. This group is a real St.Tropez for France but also for the others. A free ticket is available for the most motivated of the rest of the three. Honduras and Ecuador are of course high interesting when the World Cup is in South America. However French speaking Switzerland can get inspired if they see France playing well. Hmmm Still only France have chances to win the World Cup and this time they do. Prediction: France and Switzerland through Group F Team Messi (read Argentina the blue and white sky) will load up for the playoffs from start. The only things they have to avoid are injuries on key players and intern crises. No Maradona this time leading la Albiceleste, so the prospects look better overall. The team played without fear in the qualifications, has lived in peace from all political issues, as far as I know and they have been able concentrating on the 2nd most important thing on Planet Earth: football. Russia seems to be smashed by bad success in hockey and grabbing Krim from the Ukraine. Algeria is that Africa? Korea have some speed and still fresh winds for football. Prediction: Belgium and Korea through

Olin matkustanut Brasiliassa aikaisemminkin ja kirjoittanut siitä työssäni Helsingin Sanomien ulkomaantoimittajana. Toisaalta kirjeenvaihtaja kirjoittaa lehden kaikille osastoille. Mikä Brasiliassa kiinnostaa? Brasilian monimuotoisuus tekee siitä valtavan kiehtovan. Brasilia on mantereen kokoinen maa ja sisäiset erot sen mukaisia. Mitä Brasiliassa pitää pelätä? 20 1. Hej du har bott i Swansea, varför hejar du inte på ManUtd? >> För att jag har bott i Swansea! Och för att min bror hejar på ManU, och för att bråka med honom så hejar jag inte på ManU. ;) 2. Allvarligt, vem är du och varför gillar du fotboll? >> För att stjäla min twitterbrskrivning: Finnish journalist, coffee-addict and wannabe globetrotter. Interested in environment, development, conflicts, human rights and sports, of course. Att tycka om sport har väl kommit med modersmjölken, men att just fotboll är bäst beror väl på att det är så spännande och har många element, och en match är just precis lagom lång! Plus att det är världens populäraste sport, lite mainstream måste man vara. 3. Varför var du i Sydafrika? >> Jag har aldrig varit i Sydafrika, men jag var i Tanzania på utbyte och frilansade när det var fotbolls-vm i Sydafrika. Inför VM tränade Brasiliens lag i Tanzania med en vänskapsmatch mot TZ. Jag var och såg på matchen och en supporter sprang in på planen och kramade Kaka, sen blev han nationalhjälte några dagar. 4. Vad tyckte du om fotbolls-vm 2010 I SYDAFRIKA? >> Att följa med VM i Afrika var en speciell upplevelse. Medan jag tyckte att till exempel Spanien mot Portugal var en väldigt spännande match fick jag se på den ensam för alla andra tittade på Ghana-Nigeria istället. 5. Du hejar på HIFK i ishockey, kan en hockeysupporter älska fotboll? >> När det gäller mig borde väl frågan vara att kan en fotbollssupporter älska hockey, och svaret är självklart! 6. Vad anser du om engelsk fotbollskultur? engelsk livsstil? >> I England har jag aldrig bott ;) (Liselott har bott i Swansea, Wales) Men jag tycker om den brittiska kuluren och fotbollskulturen, det är så skönt när alla är engagerade i den nationella fotbollen. Och de har sin helt egen lilla grej going on there, svårt att lägga fingret på, men jag skulle definitivt kunna flytta till Storbritannien på heltid! Var annanstans kallar gubben som radar upp äpplen i butiken en för sweetheart? 7. Är GB så internationellt som jag tänker? >> Jag vet inte vad du tänker, men det är internationellt på sitt sätt och väldigt brittiskt på ett annat sätt. 8. Hur ser Wales fotboll ut? >> Den ser ut som Ryan Giggs. ;) Eller om jag kort skulle beskriva det så är det underligt att ett land som har producerat så många stjärnor inte har ett bra landslag. 9. Vilken är nivån på Premier League fotboll? >> Den bästa nivån, enligt mig! 10. Följer kvinnor med fotboll i GB? >> Självklart 11. Vad fick dig att komma tillbaka till Finland? >> Studierna tog slut, vänner, familj, jobb, bastu, den finska sommaren, snö (medger alltså inte vår högklassiska Veikkausliiga fotboll) 12.
