2 HOW TO CHOOSE THE SHORT-TERM OPTIONAL SUBJECTS? The choices are made for your upcoming 8 th OR 9 th grades. Choose two (1 st and 2 nd choices) short-term optional courses (1 hour per week) and two (3 rd and 4 th ) alternative shortterm optional courses. Mark your choices and alternatives on the form. Think carefully about the order of your choices in terms of your preferences and interest in the course. Evaluation of the short -term courses is passed/ failed. You will choose optional courses together with your parent or guardian. Remember that you commit to study the short-term courses during your school year. So, consider your options carefully. REMEMBER ALTERNATIVE CHOICES! Sometimes there may not be enough students to fill the class that you selected as your favourite one. Your choice also may not be given, if it overlaps in your schedule with another class. The school renovation may effect on possibilities offering all the courses. Make good choices! 3 BIOLOGIA MAANTIETO - BIOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY 1. ADDITIONAL COURSE IN BIOLOGY BIOLOGIAN SYVENTÄVÄ KURSSI If you want to increase your knowledge in biology with hands-on experiments and your own research, this course is for you. During the lessons students learn more about biological phenomena especially due practical work and projects. This course combines all the areas from upper grade biology, from water ecosystems to human biology, focusing on the most interesting topics. 2. FIELDWORK COURSE COMBINES BIOLOGY GEOGRAPHY AND PE Let s spend the lessons outdoors! At least every second week we will be outdoors learning biology and geography by doing fieldwork. We make study trips to e.g. the forests and suburbs of Tampere. Students participate in the planning of destinations and topics. PE can be just walking in the forest, but if wanted also city orienteering, skiing, you name it! The amount of lessons per week varies between 1-3 hours as weeks allocated for planning may have only one lesson, but if the destination is further away we have the option to use 3 hours for the trip. 3. REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY (N. AMERICA, ASIA, AUSTRALIA) Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Sydney - here we come! The upper school s geography lessons focus more on Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Finland. This course takes you to the Northern America, Asia and Australia. We will learn geography mostly through games, group work and projects. We make the study plan together based on students wishes. 3

4 HISTORIA JA YHTEISKUNTAOPPI HISTORY & SOCIAL STUDIES 4. LAKITIETOA YHDEKSÄSLUOKKALAISILLE 9. lk. Tavoitteet: Lakitiedon kurssilla tutustumme Suomen lakeihin ja oikeusjärjestelmään. Pohdimme sitä, miten oikea ja väärä yhteiskunnassamme määritellään ja miten lakien noudattamista valvotaan. Selvittelemme myös, millaisista teoista seuraa rangaistus ja miten muille aiheutettuja vahinkoja korvataan. Perehdymme nuorille tärkeisiin lakeihin ja sääntöihin sekä tutustumme oikeuksiimme ja velvollisuuksiimme. Sisältö: Opiskelemme esimerkkien avulla ja teemme usein työtä ryhmissä. Tutustumme syyslukukaudella Poliisimuseoon ja keväällä vierailemme Tampereen käräjäoikeuden istunnossa. Contents - Finnish legislation and legal system - A visit to district court 5. DIGGING DEEPER TO ANCIENT WORLD 8th or 9th grade Aims: Are you interested Greek mythology, the lives of people in Ancient Rome or the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt? Or would you like to know more about the Incas of South America or Ancient China? In this history course we will learn more about ancient cultures in 2600 BCE 500 CE. Contents: At the beginning of the course we will make a timeline and plan the contents together. Each student will choose an individual topic. We will work in small groups, in English. 5 KIELET LANGUAGES 6. CHINESE The Chinese language entails fascinating history, culture, legends. Spoken Chinese is like music, written Chinese like pictures. Studying and using Chinese develops one s brain because both hemispheres of the brain are needed when reading a language based on pictures. China is one of the fastest developing markets. So, in the future there will be a growing demand for experts on the Chinese language. Join the Chinese wonder! On the short-term course in Chinese you will learn to cope in everyday situations. The emphasis is on listening and speaking. You will get to know the most common (and the oldest in the world) characters and learn to write in pinyin. You ll also familiarize yourself with Chinese customs, festivals and food. You ll learn the cultural aspects by doing things yourself. Chinese is the number 1 language in the world. If you know Chinese, you will stand out! Kiinan kieli on kiehtovaa historiaa, kulttuuria, legendoja. Kiina on puhuttuna kuin musiikkia, kirjoitettuna kuin kuvakieltä. Kiinan kielen opiskelu ja käyttäminen kehittää aivoja, koska kuviin perustuvien merkkien lukemiseen tarvitaan sekä aivojen vasenta että oikeaa puolta. Kiina on maailman nopeimmin kehittyviä markkina-alueita, joten kiinan kielen osaajista on tulevaisuudessa suuri tarve. Tule mukaan kiinalaiseen ihmeeseen! Kiinan lyhytkurssilla opit selviytymään arkipäiväisissä tilanteissa. Painopiste on kuuntelemisessa ja puhumisessa. Tutustutaan yleisimpiin, maailman vanhimpiin kirjoitusmerkkeihin ja opetellaan kirjoittamaan pinyin-kirjoituksella. Tutustut myös kiinalaiseen tapa-, juhla- ja ruokakulttuuriin. Kulttuuriin tutustutaan toiminnallisesti itse tekemällä. 5

DIGITAL ENGLISH You will be -using ICT to present texts e.g. PowerPoint, Smart Notebook, Word -producing multimodal texts: combining two or more modes of communication (e.g. written, aural and visual) to create meaning -combining words and images, images, video-clips and sound in moving-image texts You will also -develop ICT skills across a range of programs and contexts, considering appropriate design & layout -learn and explore various aspects of media culture, from social networking sites and lifestyle magazines to films and overall literacy -explore the importance of both online and offline communication and test new methods -develop your critical thinking, presentation and online research skills 8. CREATIVE ENGLISH AND DRAMA - ACTING, WRITING FILMING AND EDITING You will develop your reading and particularly presentation skills while performing and improvising. You ll hone your writing skills through practical exercises in play-writing, the focus, however, kept on improving your oral and presentation skills. 9. SPELA OCH PRATA PÅ SVENSKA How to learn Swedish in a fun way? Let s get together, talk and play games to improve your vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and fluency. 10. CULTURA ESPAÑOLA Syventävä kurssi 8.lk 9.lk An experimental and conversational approach to Spanish speaking cultures: music, food, dance sports and lifestyle. Kulttuuritietämyksen syventäminen: Oppilas perehtyy monipuolisesti espanjankieliseen kulttuuriin. Tunneilla katsotaan esim. filmejä, kokataan, tutustutaan musiikkiin, kulttuurihenkilöihin ja juhlapäiviin sekä valmistetaan pieniä esityksiä. 6

7 11. LES MEDIAS ET LA CULTURE EN FRANCAIS/ RANSKAN KIELI Syventävä kurssi 8. tai 9.lk Increase the student s cultural knowledge of France. The student will get to know the cultural things of the target country in many interesting ways. We will watch films, cook local delicacies, listen to music and prepare small presentations. Some important cultural persons and festivals will be discussed. We also read different text types, such as poems, cartoons, fairy tales and lyrics. Active participation and presence in the class is required to pass the course. Ranskalaisen kulttuuritietämyksen syventäminen Sisältö: Oppilas perehtyy monipuolisesti kielialueen kulttuuriin. Tunneilla katsotaan esim. filmejä, kokataan, tutustutaan musiikkiin, kulttuurihenkilöihin ja juhlapäiviin sekä valmistetaan pieniä esityksiä. LIIKUNTA PHYSICAL EDUCATION 12. EXPERT OUTDOOR RUNNING Aims: The aim of the course is to get the possibility to train different kind of yearround running training in a group which enhances the fitness level in all sports. Students will learn the basics of running training program planning and correct techniques. Contents: Theory and practical exercises with different paces in trail running, interval running, stair running, relay running, uphill running, downhill running, sprint running, endurance running, coordination training and running games Assessment: passed/failed To pass the course, the student needs to work through the exercises given during the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in Finnish language, if needed. 7

8 13. EXPERT ORIENTEERING Aims: The goal of the course is to improve orienteering skills together with other students and to have the chance to get individual orienteering coaching. Students will learn good hints in map reading and how to use compass. Contents: Theory and practical exercises in different terrains and with different kind of maps. Assessment: passed/failed To pass the course, the student needs to work through the exercises given during the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in Finnish language, if needed 14. WEIGHT TRAINING COURSE (KUNTOSALIKURSSI) Aims: The aim of the course is to learn how to practice and behave in the local public gym. Students will learn the basics of strength training program planning and correct weightlifting techniques. Contents: Theory and practical exercises in the gym Assessment: passed/failed To pass the course, the student needs to work through the exercises given during the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in Finnish language, if needed. 15. SKILLS & CONDITION COURSE Aims: The goal of the course is to help participants find sports they are interested in and get them to do them actively Contents: Team sports, racket games, physical exercise Assessment: passed/failed To pass the course, the student needs to work through the exercises given during the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in Finnish language, if needed. 8

9 16. OUTDOOR TEAM SPORTS Aims: The goal of the course is to take part of in different team sports that strengthen motor skills but also help to develop social skills. Contents: Team sports Assessment: passed/failed To pass the course, the student needs to work through the exercises given during the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in Finnish language, if needed. MATEMATIIKKA MATHEMATICS 17. MATH SUPPORT COURSE FOR THE 8TH GRADERS Aims: The aim of the course is to improve student s basic skills for those students who need extra help in math. Contents: The course follows the same topics as ordinary teaching giving pupil s a change to get extra practice and help to get through math courses. During the course at least the following topics will be covered: Basic mathematic operations, algebraic expressions, equations, some geometry. Assessment: passed/failed To pass the course, the pupil needs to work through the exercises given during the lessons. Teaching will be given in English but learning will be supported in Finnish language, if needed. 18. MATH EXTRA FOR THE 9TH GRADERS The aim of this course is to prepare pupil for studying math in the advanced course of Finnish lukio (laaja matematiikka) or IB. Student should have at least good (8) skills of math prior to the course. The contents of the course are: indices, polynomials, rational expressions. 9

10 Assessment, passed: student passes the exam at the end of each period, and is able to work through most of the tasks given during the lessons. Matematiikan preppauskurssi lukion laajan matematiikan opintoihin tai IB:lle. Hyvät matematiikan taidot (vähintään 8) ovat perusedellytys tästä kurssista selviytymiselle. Sisällöt: potenssit, polynomilaskentaa, rationaalilausekkeita. Kurssiarviointi on hyväksytty kun hyväksytysti suoritettu koe lukukausien lopussa sekä aktiivinen tuntityöskentely. MUSIIKKI MUSIC 19. BAND COURSE BÄNDIKURSSI During the course students will learn to play and sing in a group and improve their musicianship and singing. We play and sing famous pop, rock, musical and jazz pieces. Tavoitteet: - Mukava yhdessä musisoiminen - Musiikillisten taitojen kehittäminen eri bändisoittimissa ja laulussa - Yhteismusisoinnin ja esiintymistaitojen vahvistaminen Sisältö: Kurssilla harjoitellaan perusteita eri bändisoittimista ja mikkilaulusta. Kappaleina ovat tunnetut pop-, rock-, jazz- ja musikaalisävelmät. Voi itse valita keskittyykö soittamiseen vai laulamiseen. Yhteismusisointiin voi osallistua myös omalla instrumentilla. 10

11 S2 FINNISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE SUOMI TOISENA KIELENÄ 20. SUOMEN KIELI MEDIASSA Kurssisisältö määräytyy oppilaiden senhetkisen suomen kielen taidon mukaan. Kurssilla käsitellään erilaisia mediatekstejä ja harjoitellaan niiden kirjoittamista sekä katsotaan ja analysoidaan suomenkielisiä elokuvia ja muita ohjelmia. Finnish language in the media The course description depends on the current language skills of students. Different media texts are examined and written, and Finnish movies and other television programs are watched and analyzed during the course. KÄSITYÖ CRAFT 21. SEW IT UP Students designs the product or products which they want to make during the course. The used techniques will be chosen based on students interest. We get the needed materials together from shops. Student needs to participate and work actively during lessons to pass the course. Oppilaat suunnittelevat itse tuotteen tai tuotteet, jotka he haluavat valmistaa kurssin aikana. Käytettävät tekniikat valitaan oppilaiden oman kiinnostuksen mukaan. Materiaalit käydään hankkimassa kaupoista yhdessä. Saadakseen hyväksytyn suorituksen oppilaan on käytävä tunneilla ja työskenneltävä aktiivisesti. 11

12 22. TECHNICAL CRAFT - DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Be an inventor and design a variety of unique products. Construct your own items out of wood, metal, plastic or other materials. It is also possible to choose electric kits or design an electrical product. Your unique items can be designed for daily use or decorative purposes, the possibilities are endless! Tekninen työ Suunnittelua ja teknologiaa Suunnitellaan ja valmistetaan tuotteita puusta, metallista ja muovista. Voit valita myös elektroniikkasarjojen rakentelun tai suunnitella oman sähköllä toimivan laitteen. ÄIDINKIELI JA KIRJALLISUUS 23. LUOVA KIRJOITTAMINEN Tavoite: Oppilas vapautuu kirjoittajana ja pääsee kokeilemaan monenlaisten fiktiivisten tekstien kirjoittamista. Sisältö: Luovan kirjoittamisen tunneilla kirjoitetaan suomeksi monenlaisia tekstejä; syvennetään jo äidinkielen ja kirjallisuuden (ja S2) tunneilla opittuja tietoja ja taitoja, kokeillaan uutta ja heittäydytään sanojen ja lauseiden ja tekstin ja kielen maailmaan. ATK - ICT 24. DIGITAL IMAGES MANIPULATING Aims: Learning to fix your photos to look better and creating manipulated images with layers. Learning to draw pictures, animations and logos with painting tools. Content: We ll study how to use GIMP image manipulating program to fix and manipulate photos and to draw images. With layers you can for example take objects from an image and mount them to another. GIMP is an open source program with many features and is freely downloadable for Windows, Mac and Linux OS. 12

13 25. WEB TECHNOLOGIES Aims: Learning to make web-pages with html5, which means using html, css and Javascript together. Content: At first we ll make web-pages with html and css and then learn to use Javascript -programming language to make them interactive. With html5 it is also possible to make solutions like simple games etc. You ll also learn how to maintain your own web-site if you want to have your pages in the internet. 26. BUILDING A COMPUTER Aims: Have you ever wondered what is actually inside a computer and what is the function of each component there? Or maybe you want to upgrade your old computer to meet the requirements of a new game. This is your course! Content: We disassemble a computer and build it again. In small groups, you buy virtually parts for a new rig and make a presentation which each group then shows to rest of the class. MUUT 27. TUKIOPPILAAT PEER STUDENTS Tukioppilaat ovat koulumme 8.- ja 9.-luokkalaisia oppilaita, jotka ovat valmiita sitoutumaan tukioppilastoiminnan yleisiin tavoitteisiin. Tukioppilaaksi soveltuu oppilas, joka osaa ottaa toiset huomioon, on aktiivinen ja haluaa edistää yhteistä hyvinvointia koulussamme. Tukioppilastunneilla suunnitellaan ja toteutetaan erilaisia koulun tapahtumia ja teemapäiviä. Työskentely on projektiluonteista ja vaatii pitkäjännitteisyyttä. Tukioppilastuntien tavoitteena on iloinen, hyväksyvä ja kannustava ilmapiiri sekä luova yhdessä tekeminen. 13

Arviointi: hyväksytty / hylätty Peer students are ordinary 8th and 9th graders that work in order to strenghten the school community. In the peer student course students organize various theme days and events. The aim in the course is to promote a feeling of companionship among the students, make schooling more enjoyable, increase social resposibility and secure a safe and supportive school year for all. Student needs to participate and work actively during lessons to pass the course. Evaluation: passed / failed. 14
